Why won't my Dell Optiplex 760 SFF see my ATI Radeon 5450 HD Graphics Card

Hi all, I recently upgraded the graphics card in my Dell Optiplex 760 SFF to a new ATI Radeon 5450. Unfortunately the OS (Windows 7) doesn't detect the card. I have also changed graphic priority in the BIOS, to ensure it's using the PCIe slot. Have any of you experienced this before? Is this because I haven't configured the device right or maybe there's not enough power going to the new graphics card? I'm new to all of this so any help you can provide would be appreciated.

Thanks, Chris

I see. This is the item I purchased: cgi.ebay.co.uk/.../eBayISAPI.dll. The listing says "With a power consumption of under 45 watts at full load, no external power supply is required and installation is very easy." I don't know a lot about computer hardware. Could you verify that it won't work with my Dell? Thanks again for your help.

Hi Chris,

Dell Optiplex 760 SFF system is shipped with a 235 W power supply; however the ATI Radeon 5450 card requires a 400 W or greater power supply.

You may refer to the link below to check the system requirements and specifications for the card.

The link is http://dell.to/175A46c.

Hope this helps. Please feel free to reply for any further assistance.

The card should work fine if it is a good working card and you don't have a compatibility issue.  It will not be related to power.  The HD 5450 only uses 20 watts at most.  I use the HD 6450 on a Dell 220 watt power supply with Windows 7 which is known to have less compatibility problems than the HD 5450 and uses more power (approx. 30 - 32 watts).

Reseat the card again in the PCIe slot to make sure it is connected properly.  Check your monitor connections also to the card.  Once installed, you should be able to boot to your desktop and install the AMD driver and Catalyst software for the card.  You should download and install the most recent version which is 13.9 directly from the AMD website.

I see that there is a 7 day return policy.  Therefore, if it just does not work, I would return it and look to get the HD 6450.  There is hardly any cost difference between the two.

If you haven't already, update the BIOS to the latest version.

For what it's worth, I have a 6570 installed in an Optiplex GX620 SFF and it functions perfectly.
