Dell Inspiron 660 - No boot device available

So I was trying to install Fedora on my computer and ended up messing my computer up.  Partitioned my hard drive and installed it to the partition but when I restarted it, the no boot device available showed up.  I was able to load Fedora by going through Legacy boot.  And on Fedora I looked at my hard drive and it still says there is a 887mb partition which should be windows 8, I just dont know how to get to it.  This happening shows I don;t know too much of the technical side of computers, but I will do my best to answer any questions from anyone willing to help. Thanks

Hi Jason040888,

Windows 8 work in UEFI mode, not in Legacy mode. It appears that the Windows 8 partition is corrupted. I would recommend you to reset the BIOS settings to defaults and try restoring the system back to Factory Settings.

Note: Please backup the data as this process leads to complete data loss.

Below are the steps to perform PC Restore in Windows 8:

  • Shut down the computer.
  • Power On the system.
  • Power Off the system at Dell Logo with “rolling dots” at the bottom of the screen.
  • Repeat the above steps 2-3 times/.
  • Click ‘Troubleshoot’.
  • Click the Dell Backup and Recovery icon.

  • The system restarts and comes back up, click Next on the Dell Backup and Recovery Screen.

  • The system would be checked to see if the smart repair option can fix the issue, click Next once this is done.

  • You will be prompted to select the backup to be used, click the factory image option or select from one of the backups. Click Next.

  • You will be prompted to backup your files, if needed do so by selecting the option Yes, backup my personal files (Make sure to have an external backup hard drive handy.) or select No, Erase my files.

  • The system goes ahead and completes the restore of the operating system. Click Restart when prompted.

  • Follow the on-screen instructions to setup the system with windows.

Hope this helps. Please reply if you have any questions.

Thanks for the fast response.

I reset the BIOS to the default settings, but when I restart the computer it still pops up as "no boot device available"

then it's says sata0 installed Sata 1 installed sata2 none sata3 none

So unfortunately I can't get into windows at all

Hi Jason040888,

Please try and run diagnostics on the system to confirm hardware functionality. Here are the steps:

  • Restart the system and immediately start tapping the 'F12' key to enter the 'Boot Menu'.
  • Use the 'Down Arrow' key to highlight the 'Diagnostics' option. Press the 'Enter' key.
  • The diagnostics will begin. Please note the exact error message/code, if any appears on the screen.
  • You may also refer to the video on the link http://dell.to/17DCL0R for more information.

If the test pass, it is possible that you might need to re-install Windows to fix the issue. Please back up the data as this process leads to data loss.

Please reply if you have any questions.

Hi Jason040888,

Please share the system's Service Tag and Owner's Name with me via private message (click my username and then click Send a Private Message). I'll review the details and check what best can be done to arrange for the discs.

Awaiting your response!
