By the way, yes this computer has sat on a shelf for 2 years because I couldn't get it to connect.

Hi VeniVidiDejaVu,

Please check the device manager to see if there are any missing drivers.

Provide the device ID for the hardware that requires drivers. You may follow the instructions mentioned below to get the Device ID for the Network controllers:

  • In ‘Device Manager’, right click ‘Network Controller’.
  • Click ‘Properties’.
  • Click ‘Details’.
  • Search for ‘Device Instance ID’.
  • Provide the numbers after VEN and DEV.

Similarly check and share the device ID for other devices with missing drivers.

Keep me posted with the results. I will be glad to assist you further.

Thanks ieee488. Tried the link but it says "Article Not Found - The chosen document is not currently available. Please try again later."

So I will.

Kuldeep: first, thanks for responding. Now, you are definitely not dealing with an Einstein here, even tho' I have used computers for 30 years. I did a search, but did not find "Device Manager", "Network Controller", or "Device instance" on this computer.

Device Manager is in Control Panel. You'll see all your hardware listed in Device Manager. Network Controller will be listed under the Network Adapter category. Double click on the Controller and choose Details. From the drop down menu choose Hardware Id's and note the VEN and DEV numbers.

When doing a reinstall make sure you install drivers in the correct order.

Paul, EJN63, and all: OK, found it. Under Network Adapters it show "1394 Net Adapters". All for the "Other Devices" have a yellow question mark next to them, so I assume I will have to download all of these drivers from the Dell site.

I am using the Dell Download Manager to download 20 drivers I have selected to a memory stick attached to my new computer. I will then put the memory stick on the USB port on the old, screwed up Dell and upload the drivers. The Dell downloader has placed them in this order:

Applications

IDE/EIDE

Communications

Input

Network

Removable Storage

Video

This does not appear to be the correct order for installation according to the Dell prescribed download order list. I have read FAQs and everything else, but am just not bright enough to figure out the right order, and none of these is labeled "Chipset", or some of the other identifications in the download order list. So, my question is: Is the list shown above in the correct download order? Thank you for your help; and sorry for being so thick.

Better to download them with your web browser.

If you click on Support at the top of the page and then enter your Service tag and the drivers & downloads tab and choose your operating system you will see chipset listed for the Intel Chipset driver and also System Utilities for Notebook System Software.

What you have to understand is that it is you who will initiate the install process manually, it is not an automatic process. The order of installation is determined by you and the list given to you previously. Follow the list and then install each driver accordingly in the order given.

The download manager is just a convenient way to download several drivers in one session. It does not determine any sort of order.

Kuldeep: the numbers I see under "Device Instance ID" are VEN 8086 and DEV =
