Optiplex 9010 AIO BIOS Update Error - ME FW Update Failed: Internal error: FWU_Buffer

Greetings!

I have an Optiplex 9010 AIO. This morning I was trying to update the BIOS of my system, from A10 to A13. During the update process it showed an error: "ME FW Update Failed: Internal error: FWU_Buffer " - please see the photo below. Although the update failed on the Management Engine part, it still boots up and running OK. I tried couple of times to update the BIOS, and each time I got the same error. I tried to flash the A12 and A11 BIOS as well, A12 gives same error, and A11 has the same Management Engine version hence no use.

Any help on this is very much appreciated!

Hi Stone3t,

Can you provide a screen shot showing the current BIOS version?

Hi Osprey4,

The 2nd picture in my original post is the screenshot I took when I lunch the bios update. It shows that I'm on A13 with Intel Management Engine Update 8.1.20.1336.

Anyway the photo below is the one I took in the BIOS interface if any help.

Many thanks!

It appears your upgrade to A13 was successful.

Thanks for your reply Osprey, I can see the current BIOS version is A13, however my concern is the Intel Management Engine version is stuck at 8.1.20.1336, and this is the bit which failed during the BIOS update.

Is there any way to update the Intel Management Engine to the current version 8.1.40.1416?

Many thanks!

You didn't say what version of Windows you're using, but go here, and select your OS at the top, then look under Chipset for the latest Intel ME updates for your hardware.

Hi Ron,

Thanks for your reply.

Just to clarify, I am not talking about Intel Management Engine Driver/Software under windows. I am talking about the Intel Management Engine that embedded in the BIOS. As you can see from my screenshot, A13 BIOS is upgrading several functions embedded in the BIOS, Intel Management Engine is one of them, which failed during the upgrade process. Therefore the version of Windows I was using is irrelevant. If it helps, I was using Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit with SP1.

Any further help on this topic is very much appreciated!

I have exactly the same problem but on OptiPlex 7010.
The BIOS update to A16 went well but it does not update ME FW.

I thought that it could be caused by the missing MebX password as you only enter the BIOS password when updating the BIOS.
So I have changed the BIOS password to be the same as the MebX password but no luck.

The last 10 OptiPlex 7010 we received from Dell already have the newest BIOS A16 and also the correct MebX version.
But I cannot update MebX of the other OptiPlex 7010 we already have.

Would be great if someone at Dell could have a look at this issue.

many thanks,
Reto

Yesterday I installed the newly released A14 BIOS for the 9010 AIO, and this time the ME FW has been successfully updated, although the updating process took considerable longer time compared to A13.

Maybe Dell will soon release a new BIOS for the 7010?

I had the same issue with a Optiplex 7010.  I just downloaded all available Bios updates from A09 thru A17 and ran them one at a time.  The results related to ME FW failure were as follows.

A09 - No ME FW error

A12, A13 Fail - Fail

A14 - Success (updated to .1350)

A15 - Success (updated to .1416)

A16, A17 - No errors ( same version at .1416).

So, what workded for me with Win 7 64bit was to step up thru the BIOS versions

I also noticed that there is an installation note for Windows 8.1 updated machines that if one is going from anything prior to A14 up to A17, they suggest running the BIOS update in DOS mode.

Hope that may be helpful.

I have downgraded from A16 to A05 which has ME 8.0.4.1441 and then installed every Bios update avaiable:

A09, 8.1.0.1265  ---> ME FW Update failed
A12, 8.1.20.1336 ---> ME FW Update failed
A13, 8.1.30.1350 ---> ME FW Update failed
A14, 8.1.30.1350 ---> ME FW Update failed
A15, 8.1.40.1416 ---> ME FW Update failed
A16, 8.1.40.1416 ---> ME FW Update failed
A17, 8.1.40.1416 ---> ME FW Update failed

still have ME Version 8.0.4.1441 from A05. also tried with USB stick booting to DOS.

RETOK,

I realized after I posted that my error was similiar but not the same. Mine was a "Validation Error".  If you still have warranty you can hit the Dell support chat and see what tricks they have available.  I did some web search and looked at Intel's site support as well but didn't see anything specific to this error.

Try updating your BIOS using MSDOS.

With rufus you can create an MS DOS formatted USB stick.

The issue was fixed with BIOS A19 (for the Standard Optiplex 9010) other models will follow.
The BIOS has to be flashed twice!

Yes! I second this post since I also have had this issue where using the suggested BIOS update for Windows 10 Pro using MS-DOS [FreeDOS] updated everything except the Intel ME FW upgrade which failed for whatever reason.

The OptiPlex 7010 seems to be working just fine on the A22 BIOS update currently even though the problem mentioned happened, so a future BIOS update fix would be nice.
