Want to set up a 946 as both a local printer and a network printer

I am thinking about buying a 3300 wireless adapter to use with my all-in-one Dell 946. I have AT&T wireless in my home. I have a Dell Dimension 1100/B110 desktop without wireless capability and a Dell Inspiron 1521 with wireless capability. Both computers use XP.

It looks like the 3300 adapter connects to the same receptacle on the back of the 946 where I run the printer cable from the desktop.  Apparently I will lose the local printer for my desktop computer when the inspiron 1521 laptop gains ability to print any place in the house.

Am I understanding my situation correctly? Will I have to use the all-in-one as a network printer with the desktop?

beedot45,

Just having the Ethernet cable plugged in the wireless router, it will send the print command over the wireless network to the 3300 and then print, no usb cable needed from the desktop to the printer.

beedot45,

Your desktop computer, is it plugged in to the wireless router?

Setting up the Dell Wireless Printer Adapter 3300 The Dell Wireless Printer Adapter 3300 works with no security, WEP Security and WPA-PSK (TKIP) Security (Personal) ONLY.

2.4GHz ONLY

Make and model of your wireless router and the type of security you're using? What channel?

Yes, the desktop is plugged into the Pace/TwoWire router.  AT&T set me up with defaults.

Well, if you are saying that both the desktop and the laptop must use the printer wirelessly, you have answered my question. I thought I would like to have the flexibility of being able to leave the desktop using the 946 as its local printer since it sits right by it anyway.  I know I can get to the printer as a network printer from any computer that has it installed. Oh well.

Hopefully I will do ok configuring the router via the laptop. I may as well order the 3300 and give it a go. I know I can count on you to help me again if I ask. I've been a fan of the posting by Rick for quite some time.

Betty,

You can still use the printer using the usb cable, but it would not be needed. To switch the cable from the 3300 to the computer and then switch it back so the other computer can print. I like the option of having the printer wireless, since you can print whenever you choose.

You can keep the printer attached to the computer and instead of using the 3300, you can use the desktop as a host computer, then the other computers would share printing. The only thing is that the host computer, the desktop, would need to be turned on and logged in for the other computer(s) to print.
