can't install Dell 926 AIO driver on Win XP

I have a mint-fresh Win XP SP 3 on my PC. All available Win updates downloaded and installed.

Dell printer is #2 on my list to be installed (#1 was Adobe Reader), i.e. I do not expect no conflicts.

I downloaded and unpacked R146832.exe,

it doesn't run automatically,

when I launch SETUP file, it comes through 3 windows and stalls on the 4th one,

here is how it looks

Connect Your Printer

In order to continue the installation, your printer must be connected using the USB cable.

Please connect all cables to your printer and turn the power on.

Note: installation will not continue until you connect the USB cable to the printer and your computer.

Back Next Cancel

This window gives the same message no matter if printer is connected to the computer or isn't.

I have 4 USB ports (2 front, 2 back), and I've tried each one by one,

those on the front I use a few times a day (flash drive, Kodak camera, JVC camcorder),

those on the back are used by external hard drive and Canon printer,

i.e. all USB ports are good.

To exclude mechanical problem, I tried USB cable from (working great) Canon printer.

I also tried to run this SETUP file thru the Windows Start menu.

In all cases, the button NEXT stays inactive, and Setup stops.

GButch,

Fresh install, was this a Dell Computer? If yes, did you install the drivers in the correct order? How to Download and Install Drivers in the Correct Order Dell system software and chipset drivers first or the rest of the drivers will fail to install.

First run Delete Print Jobs to remove stuck print job(s) from the queue, then restart the computer.

Try reading the instructions at...

Dell 926 Photo All-In-One Printer owners thread (W7)

remember virus programs and firewalls will block communications.

Rick,

this wasn't a Dell computer, this was a good ol' Intel desktop (emphasis on old).
I reinstall Win XP on it at least once a year.

There is no printer installed yet, so there is no job queue to remove.
There is nothing external at all, except Adobe Reader. Installed is Win XP SP3 and all that zillion Security updates from MS website.
The devices that prove USB ports are good were used just two days ago on the same Win XP before its reinstallation.
I don't even use this desktop for Internet as there is no antivirus yet. Right now, I'm writing from another computer.
As for Win firewall, Setup has generated an exception for Dell 926, there was a message about it during installation process.

Yes, I checked this thread before posting here,
however, it is mostly about Win 7 and mostly about troubles with already installed printers,
I haven't found anything similar to my problem.

Thank you for trying to help me!

Rick, this WAS a damn firewall!

Your suggestion has made me less trustful to the system promise to create an exemption,

I've turned off the firewall, restarted the computer, and installation went smooth this time.

Thank you very much!
