r710 fan speed excessive for long period then smoked now cant get it going again
Hi I have several r710's running vmware. My main machine was running with fans more or less wide open. Just figured it was because it was the one running all my virtual machines. Went on vacation and of course it failed. Came back and it smelled burned. One of the fans was black with soot so I replaced them all. Still wont power up so took a power supply out of a working machine and made a puff sound and the power supply light went from green to orange. The machine smells kind of burnt again. Put the power supply back in the machine it came out of and it seems to still work fine. What should I try next to trouble shoot.

update pulled out the hard drives and number one was scorched black pulled it out system still will not turn on other than lcd saying intrusion has avvured

The first thing to do is take the server to a Minimum to Post configuration. That is removing everything from the server but the following.
Attempt to bring the server up under that configuration. If the system POST's like that then individually replace the removed parts until the issue returns, this allows you to identify the problem parts that way.
If the server fails to come up under that configuration try swapping the remaining power supplies slot, then with other power supply. If still fails to recover the issue may be a damaged motherboard.
Let me know what you find.

On top of what Chris said I would look through the entire system and verify that you've found everything that's been scorched. The very fact that you had soot on a fan tells me there was a full on tiny fire going on in that chassis and there is probably more damage than just what you've seen so far. Especially look around the vrm's and mosfets by each processor as those are what I would expect to go if anything were to go.

Thank you Dylank I love my dells nice to know I have a place for help! I am going to replace the hard drive board see what happens.

Thank you Chris good advice seems simple but that is why it is so good. Think I found the problem visually on this one have a look
