XPS 8300/8500/8700, video cards

As with a lot of people who seem to come here to see what cards do and don't work with XPS systems. I thought a definitive list should be put together. I myself have browsed this forum many times searching for what cards are compatible with certain XPS systems and there never really is a definitive answer on what ones people have managed to get working. For instance people said the GTX 6 series had trouble posting. I read on this very forum that it worked from a few people. So i bought one (Gigabyte GTX 660 2gb Windforce OC) and it worked. Updated to A06 Bios before hand. Anyway with that in mind, i think we should make a list of ones that work. So, state the system and model you have, the manufacturer of the card and what the card actually is. Once we get a nice list going i will compile the answers into this post for people who are searching for answers such as my self. Lately I've been browsing to see the compatibility of the GTX 970 with the XPS 8300 and have heard tentative results. Someone said about sticking to EVGA and Gigabyte. Its an expensive plunge to take if its not going to work. Could anyone advise?

Dell XPS 8300

Gigabyte GeForce GTX 660 2048 MB Windforce OC GDDR5 192-Bit

Dell XPS 8500

EVGA GeForce GTX 660 Ti FTW Signature 2 2048MB GDDR5 192-Bit

EVGA GeForce GTX 970 Superclocked ACX 2.0 4GB GDDR5 256bit

Dell XPS 8700

Thanks.  It will be arrived on Wed.  I'll see it works or not.  I've already updated Bios.

I am about to take the plunge on a gpu/psu upgrade for my dell xps 8300, after some research I have decided on a Sapphire R9 290 and a EVGA%20SuperNOVA%2080%20PLUS%20BRONZE%20Certified%20750W " target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">EVGA SuperNOVA 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified 750W  to power it, for my budget of >350$.

I am mainly concerned on the dimensions of the parts fitting inside the case, from what I have read the card at 10.9 will be snug but will fit, I am less sure on the PSU, hearing that something around 5.9" or less is best, but I cannot find a psu of the proper wattage from a reliable manufacturer of this size, the 6.5" EVGA is the shortest I could find.

I have read about some BIOS/UEFI issues as well but I admit I know little about these things, does anyone know if this version of the 290 has a "legacy switch" or if it is indeed required. If I need to supply any more information to properly answer this let me know.

Here's my thoughts on the graphics card.

R9 290 is slightly better than a GTX 960, but a GTX 960 does not require a power supply upgrade. Net cost difference is about $100 more for a 290 vs 960 when you factor in the PSU upgrade or about  30% more cost for maybe a 5% more performance.

The R9 runs hotter than the nVidia 9xx cards. XPS 8x00 cases don't have that good of airflow so you may find you'll need to add extra fans or upgrade to a new case.

Also, I haven't heard great things about the EVGA "B1" or "G1" power supplies. These are manufactured by FSP.  Also, if you are going with an EVGA power supply, I would lean towards units built by Seasonic or Super Flower. and these have part numbers with GS or *** (Seasonic built) or G2 (Superflower).

The B1 unit is built by FSP and is OK, but not great, only has a 3 year warranty, I would spend another $20 and get one based on the top rated Super Flower Leadex platform, a 10 year warranty, and 80 plus gold. This will run cooler and quieter than the 80 plus bronze version you listed.

wow, so glad I found this thread.  just bough me a R7 370 4gb card and couldn't understand why it didn't work.  wanting to see if it was the card, i tried putting it in my old inspiron 530, and SOB, it worked.  about wanted to pull my hair out of my head.  haven't read through all of this, but i can assume I will never get that card to work in my 8300.  but I was wondering, has this been corrected?  I was considering a 8900, but don't want to mess with it if this or other cards will not work in it.

I have seen reports of GTX 960s in 8300s with the stock power supply.

Return the 370 and pickup an EVGA or MSI GTX 960 and it should drop right in.

I think the AMD R7 370 will need a PSU upgrade and there may be BIOS or driver issues.

On the newer desktops, XPS 8700s are running GTX 760/770/780 GTX960/970/980/980ti with (in most cases) upgraded power supplies.

Haven't seen much action with the 8900s yet.

The bios ISSUE with R series that did not exist in the HD 7700 HD6600 HD5000 HD4000 HD3000 HD2000 series is not going away.   Vendors that know this have bios that works either way.

Sapphire support was extremely rude about this saying that there would be no fix.  This leaves people with Older Precision Workstations to have to use OLDER Radeons.  People with Precision 690's and 1000W power supplies are very sad about this.

The only one that had a switch is the HD7900 series for Mac PRO.

In My precision T3400 the issue meant that F2 CMOS Setup no longer worked and it said

DOS VESA MODE 103 Not supported.   Did not have this issue with a specific EVGA GTX 960.  No F2 Bios issues or boot issues or problems.

In older dells like Precision T3400 BIOS A09  I've used an EVGA GeForce GTX 960 SuperSC ACX 2.0+ 2GB GDDR5 128bit,  02G-P4-2966-KR

So your saying even the newer xps models will not accept a r series card?  Whew, almost bought an 8900 this week.  With this kind of compatibility mess, think i'll go back to HP.

Would just like to report that the EVGA 750W 110-B1-0750-VR (6.49" long) fit somewhat snugly in my XPS 8300 and the Sapphire R9 290 worked out of the box. Now it does run hot, and when the fan gets up to speeds of 55% or more it is a bit loud, though with a good pair of noise-cancelling headphones it isn't noticeable. I hit temps of 80C~ when playing gta v at 1920x1200 on ultra for a couple hours, going to see if I can fit another fan in the case for good measure.

you might consider a new case. checkout this thread.

a larger case with a bottom mount PSU will keep the PSU cooler as it will pull air in from the bottom and you can add two or three intake fans which will exhaust the hot air from the graphics card and help keep the rest cool.

WORKS with:

PNY - NVIDIA GeForce GTX 950 2GB GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 Graphics Card - Black/Blue (from Best Buy, GeForce chat assured me it would work, and it did)

XFX HD 6770 1 GB (works with stock O.E.M.-450W-Power Supply Unit (P.S.U.) even though it asked for 500W)(from Best Buy)

HIS HD 5450 1 GB

Does NOT Work with:

XFX R7 360P 2GB (even with P.S.U. upgraded to 600 W)(black screen of death)

I'm having an issue with an Xps 8300. Bought an r9 380, however black screen. Car is upgraded, power supply, but nothing. I've tried switching to legacy mode on the card, bios updated to ao6, uninstalled existing graphics card... Still no luck! Any advice?

I bought a PNY GTX 960 2Gb card today and put it in my XPS 8500. It would not post properly. It took a full minute for the card to finally post and I couldn't get into BIOS settings at all. Then I found this forum and upgraded BIOS from A06 to A12 and it works fine. Thanks!!

I have an radeon 5770 HD graphics card, but device manager states it's a 6770 driver I guess.  I keep getting display driver stopped, but now has recovered.  Resolution breaks up, cursor changes to something else, and sometime I have to unplug it several times to get it back working again.  I have no idea what's the problem. Happened when I download windows 10 free.  MSinfo32 doesn't work either, I have a sandy bridge code / core I guess when I use CPU-Z.  That prints out my system information.  Thanks

I have Zotac GTX 1060 Amp Edition in my XPS 8300 and it is working fine with the stock Dell 460w PSU that comes with it. After I Enabled "intel multi-monitor feature" in bios, it detected GTX 1060 card. Before that, it just showed black screen while starting windows. I played  Rise of the tomb raider and GTA V. Absolutely no issues. And I never updated the BIOS of XPS 8300. I think dell is blocking the support of new cards through Bios Update so that we keep buying new computer every 2 years.

The following XPS 8300 systems evidently  worked with a Sapphire R9 380.  See the configurations for further details.

Also, the following thread indicates that a Sapphire R9 380 Nitro $GB worked in a Dell XPS 8300, with a Seasonic S12II 620 Bronze 620W PSU.  It states that the system was set to Legacy mode.
