iDRAC7 and Integrated Services Module on ESXi

So, there does not appear to be any clear documentation from Dell on how to get the integrated services module installed and working under VMware.  I have a Dell VRTX (12th gen) with an iDRAC7 (enterprise license) in the M520 blades.  I've installed the vib for version 2 on an ESXi 5.5 update2 host - then I found (buried in the iDRAC7 user guide, which is difficult to find itself) that it will only work if you use the "USB NIC" for the OS-to-iDRAC pass-through.  The only thing it says for getting this to work in VMWare is that you must install the idrac_usb_nic vib - with no mention or reference to where to find or get the vib file.  It does not appear to be in the Dell depot, custom image, or iSM download, and Google is not turning anything up for it either.

Where exactly does one obtain the vib file for idrac usb virtual nic?

Hi,

The USB NIC VIB is not required to be installed separately. The iDRAC Service Module VIB itself takes care of configuring the USB NIC pass-through interface.

Once you install the iSM 2.0 VIB and reboot the server; it is expected to take 2-3 minutes for the USB-NIC interface to get configured.

Could you please confirm on the following?

1. iSM 2.0 is supported on ESXi 5.5. However, please let us know which iDRAC firmware version is being used?

2. Do you see the USB-NIC enabled in the iDRAC?

Login to iDRAC GUI => Navigate to "iDRAC Settings" => "Network" => Select "OS to iDRAC Pass-through" tab.

You should see the USB-NIC selected with a link-local IPv4 address.

3. What are the last 1 or 2 /var/log/syslog.log messages related to iDRAC Service Module?

You may search the log using "dsm_ism" phrase.

Thanks,

Hi,

We are trying to find where to download, it may be something that hasn’t been released yet.

Well, the iSM for ESXi has been out for a while.  And the usb nic apparently uses the cdc_ether driver, so the issue appears to be in the iSM vib install routine.

I've uninstalled and reinstalled it a few times trying to get things to work.  On one of my M520s the "vSwitchiDRACvusb" and portgroup "iDRAC Network" (vmk1) associated with the DRAC USB finally decided to show up after my last install attempt.  Took me a while to even find that tidbit of info related to installing on VMWare...

But it (vmk1 / iDRAC Network pg / vSwitchiDRACvusb) still will not install / show up on any of the other M520s, installing from VUM or esxcli.  So, I guess the question is - how is the iSM installer creating these devices and why doesn't it do it (most of the time)?  I wouldn't mind setting them up manually if need be, but I have no idea how it is doing the setup.

M520 for VRTX, iDRAC7 Enterprise, all firmware current as of 01/17/2015, ESXi 5.5 update 2 A01 (Dell install).

Hi all,

I can add that USB Host Controller musn't be in Passthrough mode. In that way ESXi can not create vusb0 adapter.
