R610 - fan at full speed, no POST

Hello all,

I have a poweredge r610 and I am having the following problem.  When I plug it in, one fan spins up to full speed (the fan all the way on the left).  The light on the power supplies are solid green.  The only other light that is illuminated is on the motherboard next to the nvram jumper.  It says "ds_paux_press".  Aside from that there are no other lights, and the system is completely unresponsive.

I've tried the following:

  • Swapping around PSUs
  • Swapping around memory
  • leaving it on to see if the problem goes away
  • leaving it unplugged for a while then trying it again.

I'm more experienced with desktop hardware, so any ideas are appreciated.  Thanks everyone!

Do you get any error messages or codes on the lcd on the front of the chassis?  That would be the first thing I would check.  Also I would try going down to a minimal system setup so pull all but one stick of memory on each side and pulling all pci cards. If that still doesn't get it I would remove the second cpu and see if you get anything and if still nothing swap the cpus around so the cpu that you pulled out of socket 2 is in the first cpu socket.

Dylank,

Thanks for the quick reply!

I forgot to mention that the LCD panel shows nothing too (it's not even backlit at all).

I pulled almost everything out of the server and swapped the CPUs around and the problem is still the same.  It even happens with pretty much everything removed from the server (CPUs, RAM, raid card, etc).

The box was working recently, although it had performed some "unexpected" reboots.  This all started when I went to reboot it one more time and since then it's been totally dead (seemingly).

I've got a feeling it's the board than at this point.  On the rear of the PSU's do you get green led's?

That's what I'm afraid of.  As for the PSUs, both of them have a solid green LED when plugged in (which as far as I understand means everything is ok).

In the end I wound up replacing the motherboard, which solved the problem entirely.  I was able to find one used on amazon for around $70 -- replacement was a breeze.  Hope this helps!

Bad update on lifecycle controller?

edit:

Short story:

I pressed power 3 times on this "no post, full fans" state and it powered up!

Long story:

I posted that because I had just aborted a lifecycle controller firmware update because it was stuck for one hour, and after reboot the r510 was having that same issue, no post, full speed on fans.

I was able to power it on with a "minimal configuration" :  basically pulled everything out, controllers, nics, even the idrac6, disconnected power cords, and pressed power for 20 seconds....

I was somehow able to replicate the state (no post, full speed fans) whenever I placed the idrac6 back.  Of course this server without idrac is as good as paperweight... (jk) So I needed it working.

After some time (of frustration) while the server was ON but no POST I just pressed the power repeatedly and the server started!

What's interesting is that idrac6 wouldn't ping or respond except for SOME racadm commands.  It would even get DHCP settings, and respond only a couple of pings.   Had to disconnect power cords, press power for 20 seconds again... and by the 2nd time idrac6 started working...
