Graphics card upgrade for T3500 Workstation.

Hello All,

I have a Dell Precision T3500 WorkStation Xeon Quad Core W3530@2.8GHz

Phoenix ROM BIOS PLUS Version 1.10 A17(Dell)

Motherboard: Dell model:09KPNV rev.A00

8GB 1333MHz DDR3 Ram, 320GB Hard Drive

Nvidia Quadro FX 580 PCI-E 512MB GDDR3 Video Graphics

Windows 7 Professional 64-bit (6.1, Build 7601) Service Pack 1

I would like to upgrade the Nvidia Quadro FX 580
to a Dell nVidia GeForce GT 330, GT 420, GT 520,or GT 610.

These Geforce cards I have no Idea whether they will work in this workstation. The Technical Guide doesn't tell me.  Or any other publication I can find. So can anyone advise me on how to proceed with these graphics card upgrades?  Will they work?

Thanks in advance,
PPW3

Hi PPW3,

Here is the spec sheet for the T3500. You'll see which cards are certified for use.

This is not a consumer machine so consumer video cards are not certified by Dell.

None of the cards you listed are much of an upgrade ... they are all very low powered cards

Hi Osprey4,

Maybe more of an explanation will get me the answers I am looking for.  I am looking to upgrade my graphics in order to meet or exceed the system requirements for an online group participation game called World of Warplanes, and War Thunder-Warplanes.

They list a minimum of GeForce 8600GT card. I have researched the nvidia site and found the the highest card that will possibly work is a GeForce GT 630, due to Bus support. (PCI Express 2.0 x)  Anything above the 630 is PCI Express 3.0.

I guess my questions revolve around whether or not these GeForce cards will work on the T3500.  Damn if they are "dell certified".  I just want to know about whether or not they will work!!  If not where do the Quardro cards with the compatible Bus support, fall in the specifications of the GeForce cards.

I'm trying to make a pseudo game machine on a low budget. Can't afford even a low-end game machine to play the games I wish to on line.  So I'm settling for whatever.

Thanks,

PPW3

Of course you are free to try any card you like. I would just make sure the vendor you purchase from has a generous return policy in case you run into problems.

Hi Osprey4,

Wow, that's a short post back.  Did I say something to offend?  If I did, I'm sorry.  I'm just an old flight simmer looking for some information.

You speak of, 'running into problems'.  Do you know what those problems might be?  Is there some bios or configuration problem that keeps me from changing to GeForce graphics cards instead of the Quadro card installed?

If you don't know the answers to my questions, do you have any idea where I might find the answers I seek?

Please help me if you can.

Thanks again,

PPW3

My apologies. I didn't intend to sound short.

These workstations are notorious for poor compatibility with aftermarket parts, especially consumer video cards. But of course, they're designed for work, not play. So my only caveat is to leave yourself the option of returning whatever you want to try.

"I would like to upgrade the Nvidia Quadro FX 580

640 is as low as I would go.

Any of the above cards work fine however those are all very low end cards.  I would recommend a GEFORCE 750 TI at a minimum.

I Have a radeon 7770 in mine and it works fine.

Asus R7 250 also works fine.

A Geforce 960 970 980 may or may not work as there are bios issues.

PCI Express 3.0 is backwards compatible to PCI Express 1.0 and 2.0.

The Asus R7 250 and Geforce 750 TI have been used and tested in my Dell precision 380, 3500, and Optiplex GX620, 745, 755,760,780. I do not and would not recommend any card that would be incompatible.

The issues with Geforce 960 970 980 are with UEFI and Secure boot vs CSM Legacy Bios and are not related whatsoever to PCI-E bus 1.0 2.0  or 3.0

Precision Workstations Allow for Double wide cards that have Aux PCI-E power.  Optiplex models do not allow this.

Any Card that has 2X wide bracket or is longer than 8 inches will have physical blockage to insertion on an optiplex although brackets can be cut down to size with tin snips.  (This is not required for the Precision workstations.)

Hello Rockstar,

Thanks for the recommendations, I appreciate your taking the time to respond with information that I can use.

However, there is a problem.  All these cards have a PCI Express 3.0 x16 Bus Support.  My Dell model:09KPNV rev.A00 motherboard has PCI Express 2.0 x16 Bus Support. That's why I mention the GeForce GT 630 as it's the highest with a PCIe 2.0 bus support. What say you to that?

Thank you in advance,

PPW3

Hi PPW3,

I too have a T3500 and i have an old GTX 470 GPU in it and run war Thunder at 60FPS which is pretty good.

Any GPU that will physically fit and that you can get power to will work in the T3500.

Hope this helps.

Hi AmGeorge,

Thanks for the information, really appreciate it.  Now I won't be so worried about spending a few bucks on a decent card.

By the way, could I ask you which Xeon processor you have in your T3500?

Thanks,

PPW3

Rockstar,

Thank you very much, I am a happy camper!  And please forgive my ignorance in my last response.  I will never again challenge your recommendations when it comes to these machines.  After all, that's why I came here!

Again, sorry about that, and thank you for the info,

PPW3

My T3500 has a Xeon W3670, and I think the motherboard is the standard board that comes with the case (someone else built it). He put a Sapphire 260X in, and I'm wondering if I could upgrade to a GTX 960 like this one www.mwave.com.au/.../gigabyte-geforce-gtx-960-windforce-oc-4gb-video-card-ab67470 My question is, will the 960 be compatible? I've seen on this forum people saying the 960 isn't compatible. I can get a super short 960 if I have to, single fan cards will certainly fit, my 260X is a single fan right now, so case space isn't a worry, but I heard something about BIOS trouble.
