Stay away from serial ATA HD. All others will work. 30 to 40 GB would be a good choice.

thx for the response, francis.

i found this ad for our local compusa:

"40gb 7200RPM Refurbished  hard drive by Western Digital for $29.99"

planning on buying this, but what's the diff between a brand new and refurbished hd? is it used and reformatted? do i need to buy extra peripherals if i do decide to buy this? sorry for asking a lot of questions since this will be an hour tripfor me. i'd like to purchase all the necessary stuff in one trip...

Refurbished means anything that was returned for any reason, even if it was returned for no reason at all. That looks like the best deal out there for what you need. I assume they'll give you the same warranty you would get on a new drive so go for it.

btw, compusa did the ol' bait n switch on me. the ad has a picture of western digital, but when i went to pick it up, the hd was actually seagate. are there any laws pertaining to this? i would think it's false advertising...

Spunjer.

Most States have laws against "bait and Switch" BUT, vendors usually have an escape clause to circumvent it.
Seagate,Western Digital and Maxtor hard drives are all good drives and the price you quoted is excellent and if the warranty is the same, it's a good buy.
