XP.pro, RDP and VNC connections fail

XP.pro, RDP and VNC connections fail

I just discovered pocketcloud and am trying out the free version on my iPad1. I successfully installed the Windows companion on my Win7/64 PC and the iPad works fine with it.

I then installed the companion on my XP/pro laptop, followed the guide in the FAQ but have connectivity failures for both RDP and VNC. I verified the settings under System properties/remote and that the firewall is set to allow remote desktop. I rebooted the computer, but still get the connectivity fail.

Suggestions?

I belatedly discovered that. But would that still prevent RDP from connecting? Where is the limitation imposed? On the host side or the client side?

Also, if I wanted to test my laptop's capability with Pocketcloud, would I have to uninstall it from my Win7 desktop before the installation would succeed on the XP.pro laptop?

Hi Speedlever,
Free version supports only one connection. If you would like to connect to multiple desktops,
Please upgrade to a paid version, Pocketcloud Pro.

Hi Speedlever,

For just testing rdp,
you dont need to uninstall any software.
You can create a manual connection.
Please make sure you device is on the same network.

I tried that unsuccessfully. Must have done something wrong.

Edit: assuming you mean create a manual connection from the iPad.

Hi Speedlever, Can you please make sure you use the external IP for your pro. Are you logged into the companion on the pro. Can you please run a diagnostic. Please right click on the yellow color kite icon-Diagnostic

Thanks for your help.

I ran the diagnostic:

Then I ran the test again from AutoDiscovery:

I checked my router's IP assignments and realized that I had the laptop connected via ethernet. The IP address above is the one I assigned to the ethernet port.

I then disconnected the ethernet cable and turned on wireless and ran the diagnostic again and see the correct assigned IP for the wireless port:

I then ran AutoDiscovery again, and had the same failed connectivity as depicted above. No need to post the same image again.

Have had other computer issues and haven't had a chance to do further tests. I did install Windows Companion on an XP.home system on another network. It shows up in my iPad, but won't connect since I still have my PC loaded. I still don't understand why my laptop running XP.pro on my network won't connect and show up like the XP.home system on another network does.

I installed VNC. Now the companion shows connectivity via VNC. Checked my iPad and now my xp.pro laptop shows up in the list.

I thought that xp.pro was supposed to be able to connect via RDP and thus VNC was not needed?

Hi Speedlever,

Correct. To simplify things, you can use Autodiscovery.
Autodiscovery makes connection establishment simpler.
All you need to do is either swype the 2 connection or delete the windows 7 connection.
Now you should be able to connect to xp pro.

I'll try it later when I have a spare moment, but as I recall, I tried to set it up manually on my home WLAN using the IP address for the laptop, but no joy. If I delete the Win7 connection, will autodiscovery pick it back up automagically? I would have thought that I could successfully RDP to port 3389 on the XP/pro laptop but that your servers would prevent my iPad from making more than one connection until/unless I upgrade to the paid version.

I need to see if Pocketcloud will survive a reboot on a PC that requires a log-in. Other projects have taken priority over this. If so, I'll probably buy it so I can have the option to maintain multiple remote hosts via my iPad. That job is typically done from my laptop or PC using logmein free. But LMI won't work on the iPad unless I spring for the $30 ignition version.. which is too pricey for me for just a stand-by option.

If your using Windows XP go to start-control panel-network connections and right click your connection.
Click properties and then click internet protocol(tcp/ip) then click properties.
If 'obtain an ip address automatically 'is checked then your not behind a proxy.

It's not listed in the uninstall list. So I would have to say no.

In my local WLAN, I have IPs assigned statically (set up in my router.) The same scenario exists for the remote XP/home machine mentioned above that shows up in my list.

Glad it shows up. with pro you should be able to connect using rdp as well.
Please make sure rdp is configured right. Computer-right click -properties-remote desktop.
