Optiplex 9020 CPU Fan speed issue

One of my Optiplex 9020 Tower computers has begun to exhibit an annoying Fan speed problem.

We have had the computer for about 18 months in the same environment and it has been running silently and fine.   Just recently the fan noise problem began.

When the computer is turned on the fan will gradually ramp up to the full 4000 something RPM speed.    This is very noisy, obviously.      Sometimes the fan will slow right down to silent again but other times it only slows down to a moderately loud noise.

  • The temperature in the office at this stage is about 22c. temperature various + or - a degree
  • The Fan and Heat sink are spotlessly clean
  • The Rest of the computer is spotlessly clean
  • The Diagnostics in the Bios for the CPU and Motherboard fan both pass.

One anomoly we noticed was Yesterday, when we were testing we noticed the ambient current temperature displayed -19C for a short period of time.  This was whilst nothing was occurring within the case.

I'm wondering if other people have experienced it and what they have done about it.

Hi ,

Thank you for writing to the Dell Community Forum!

I would suggest you to clean the air vents as dust accumulated can be one of the reasons for the system fan to be spinning vigorously .If the issue still persists do update the system BIOS from our support site but then before updating it to the latest version make sure the subsequent versions are also installed.BIOS updates fixes the BIOS if its corrupt ,BIOS controls the rate at which the system fan ,graphic card fan is spinning ,it also sends signals to the CPU which to a certain extend affects the clock frequency .

I hope this helps .If there are any more queries do reply to this ,we will be glad to assist you.

Have a great day ahead .

Kindest Regards ,

Hello Jennifer,

My second point I made stated that the fan and heat sink were perfectly clean already.
The BIOS is already at the latest BIOS level (A10 in this instance)

Hi,

Thank you for the reply!

Kindly confirm the os installed on the system .Also I would like to know if the system fan spins loudly with any particular application and does it go in for a random shutdown or reboot.

Do forward the service tag of the system via private message so that I can assist you with system specific troubleshooting steps.

Kindest Regards,
