Can't figure out how to wake up hard disk

Question

This is probably a stupid question but I have an old Inspiron 3000 that I broke out of storage for the kids.  I put a new 40 gig hard drive in and added RAM then nstalled XP.  When left alone the hard disk goes into sleep mode and I have forgotten how to wake it without simply cutting off the power.  Can anyone tell me how to wake the a sleeping hard disk? Thanks.
