Dell XPS 15 (9550) w/ Intel 530 / NVIDIA 960M - Intel Causing Screen Flickering

I have a Dell XPS 15 (9550) that I received last week from Dell with a random screen flickering issue.

It is based on evalue order code: <ADMIN NOTE: Order number removed per privacy policy>

It is the 6th Gen Core i7, 16GB RAM, 15.6" FHD 1080p display (not 4k), 512GB SSD, 84WHr Battery, Intel 530 Graphics AND NVIDIA 960M

I saw a post about the XPS 13 with the intel display flickering being fixed with the new driver... I am running driver version 20.19.15.4300 for the Intel 530 and my screen is still constantly flickering  on my brand new XPS 9550.

Another Issue: I also noticed that in the Intel graphics properties config panel -> 3D -> Application Optimal Mode... this also causes issues with the start menu looking distorted and fuzzy, even making some of the white text look gray.  I disabled this to resolve that issue, but the screen still constantly flickers.

One thing I have done recently to mitigate the flickering is go into the NVIDIA driver control panel and set the NVIDIA card as the preferred graphics card, which works for most applications. As soon as the Intel card kicks back in the screen flickers... I have tried various drivers versions for this model off the Dell website without success. I am running Windows 10 Pro...  not sure if a newer driver is available and just not posted. For example the newest Laptop BIOS on the driver website ends in .3 while my pc came with .5 installed. So wasn't sure if the website was behind on graphics driver releases, although the Dell Update app hasn't downloaded any new driver either.

I am about to return this laptop, this is annoying... I know it is the intel driver because if I uninstall the Intel Driver completely and let it install the generic microsoft basic graphics driver, while the performance isn't good, the screen does NOT flicker.

Was just wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience and if you were able to resolve it OR if this is completely a driver issue that only Dell / Intel can resolve?

Thanks!

Sounds good....

Also have them post the following missing drivers for the XPS 15 9550 on the download section, which are available under the XPS 13 9350 download section... In case a user reinstalls windows such as myself.

Intel HID Event Filter Driver

Intel Serial IO Driver

Intel Management Engine Components

I decided to turn off all of connect automatically to wifi options I have around me. When I start the computer there is no out of control flickering.  When there is one clicked to auto connect the flickering occurs again during startup.  When i notice the most out of control flickering is when i move my computer away from main router and pass by another router on my way to the second floor.  When I reach my destination the flickering is so intense even if i restart it.  Only when i disable all my auto connects then restart is the flickering  almost non existent.  I am trying to type this on my phone so i apologize for my wording.  It would be easier to explain exactly what occurs if I was using my computer or talking over the phone.  Could some software issue with the wireless antenna inside the computer be cause such flickering.?

I to have this issue.  Bought the xps 15 9550  i7, 4k, 16 gb etc from the Microsoft Store and have had nothing but issues.  I am on my fourth one in 3 days.  First three failed and crashed right out of the box.  This fourth one flickers so intensly sometimes that it is impossible to use at times.  Also I have noticed that the screen will shut down but the computer is still on when the flickering gets very intense.  Surprisingly it flickers much much less on the first floor of my house when I am near my router then on the second floor when I want to lay down and work.  Also i have noticed that if i.move the laptop off of a flat surface it will most likely flicker.  I have video of my issue that i will be happy to pass along.  I also had a color hue issue when expanding my web browser to fit the screen.  A download fixed that issue somewhat.

Not sure if my messages will be posted but i did one last test and completely turned off the computers wifi.  When I restart the computer there is zero screen flicker.  To just clarify what i have meant by screen flicker is it cutting out to a black screen and back to normal visible screen and so on.

The new BIOS for the 9550 is now live. Can you please install it and let me know if the flickering issue is resolved.

installed it.  Just got a message saying displaying driver stopped working and was recovered or something to that extent.  could have sworn it flickered but then that was before getting that message.  I also noticed when it flickers my mouse pointer sometimes goes to the center of the screen.   While typing this message my screen just flickered  twice and now as I type this message there is one long read line under this sentence saying I have misspelled everything

Unfortunately this did not work, I even had this performed on a clean installation.

I will be returning the laptop today to the microsoft store.

Hi all!

I had the same screen flickering with my brand new XPS 15 (9550).

I could trace it down to the internal grafix conflicting with hypervisor software such as hyper-v, vmware or virtualbox. As soon as I installed it, the screen starts to flicker. After removing the hypervisor everythring runs smooth and without any issues.

I stumbled upon a Microsoft issue in their KB where there tell about some issues using W10, Skylake and a hypervisor. Guess this will be fixed in the next wave of W10 or the next driver from Intel for the iGPU of Skylake.

For me it works - hope it helps guys!

Cheers and have a nice weekend,
Hans

If you could explain in a little more detail what I should attempt I would greatly appreciate it.

Hi all.

Think my last post didn't make it though I write it again.

As my new XPS 15 has also issues with screen flickering I started research and stumbled upon a article from Intel/MS. This article tells about a bug with the combination of Hyper-V, W10 and Skylake CPU.

After I removed the Hyper-V role from my W10 everything runs like charm - no screen flickering anymore. I haven't tried VMWare or VirtualBox but using a Hypervisor could be a problem at all with the Skylake inbuild iGPU.

I guess that the new W10 update delivered at the moment can bring a change. I've also read in the VMWare 12.1 update release note that some fixes have be done adressing screen flickering with Skylake CPUs.

Give it a try and de-install any Hypervisor.

Hope it helps as the new XPS is really a nice piece of tech.

Cheers, Hans

I'm having the same issue and it's happening so sporadically, sometimes it won't occur for awhile and sometimes it just keeps of flickering into the black screen... I doubt it's an issue with the actual display. I've tried everything including deleting and installing all drivers but nothing works...

My xps15 came with windows 10 home which does not have huper-v installed.  I have this issue even without it.
