Rick, if you open an account at Dell and then use your Service Tag to access the pages for your computer, there are 2 options on the left column, Original Configuration  and Current Configuration. If the DVD-ROM was original equipment, you can access the info on a different computer; if you added it later, then in your present situation, it will not do you any good, as Current Configuration requires an online scan of your computer. There were four different models of DVD-ROMs used and 3 or 4 combos, but your original configuration listed with Dell should tell you which one you have. Most of them -if not all- have firmware updates on the Dell Download pages for your C610

Thanks for the input. I have an account with Dell but purchased this one as a used unit, refurbishe by someone other than Dell. I can't be sure of the original configuration having this DVD.

I did find another route late last night. I downloaded the Non Graphical Dell Diagnostics. Created 5 floppies and and booted with that, ran the diagnostics and it gave me the info. An LD 8080B. I installed the right firmware update, and ran the diagnostics on the DVD, but it checked out okay.

So I guess I will have to post another question to run down the overall problem of not being able to install any OS from this DVD.

Thanks again.

Rick

Try cleaning the actual W-XP CD and check it for scratches or blems. I have a W98 CD which pulled that number on me one time

Dell 18THT-A00 Latitude C-Series 8X Internal DVD-ROM Optical Drive

Which drive depends on the internal mechanics of the drive.

for this drive, i used this firmware.   HLDS 8X DVD Slim-line DRN-8080B  The tricky part was having to boot from the floppy, instead of HD or CDrom. so first you have to boot from the floppy disk, then remove and insert DVD drive when it was searching, then back to floppy to finish loading the MOT file.  I had not realized at first that I had to copy the firmware files to a floppy. (DUH)  I had actually tried to do the firmware while in windows XP.    Unless you actually read the instructions and not just hit download, many of us would have assumed that is how to install the firmware.
