Latitude E5570 - Black display, no resons to keyboard/touchpad - External display/keyboard/mouse do work

I have been spending a lot of hours in troubleshooting this week.

Diagnostics are 100% ok.

Reinstalled Windows 10 about 15 times.
Installing drivers by hands, installing drives trhough the dell update management application.
The issues keeps existing.

To sum the them up:
- Cold boot (laptop is off) to Windows. Keyboard/Touchpad do not work. (Reboot and they work again)
- Resume from sleep. Keyboard/Touchpad do not work. (Reboot and the work again)

After I got the laptop I installed 32Gb of RAM and an 512Gb Samsung 950Pro PCIE M.2 NVME drive.
The drive should be support as Dell states on the product page and in the manual that PCIE with NVME is supported.

"Advanced features, like industry-leading M.2 SATA and M.2 PCIe/NVME solid state drives, provide data transfer speeds up to 4x faster over traditional hard drivers. "

In order to get the drive visible and running on PCIe I had to disable the sata controller in the BIOS.
This way the drive is detected in Windows as an PCIe NVME capable drive.

Just to verify if the issues I went back to default with the delivered 256Gb M.2 sata drive and 8Gb RAM.
To install Windows I had to turn the Sata controller back on.

Installed the drivers manually updated WIndows and tested.
The issues do NOT occur.

Retested by installing the drivers using the Dell Update Application.
The issues do NOT occur.

So I figured out that the SATA controller somehow is the guilty part for all the issues.
I mean when enabled to ACHI or RAID the sleep and non working keyboard/touchpad issues do not occur.

When disable the issues DO occur.

So DELL can you please tell me how I can fix this as you state PCIe NVME drives are supported??

Had some good news as I finally got some stuff fixed.
I had updated the BIOS to version 1.3.8 a while back.
The Dell Update tool did a rollback to 1.3.6 2 weeks ago.
Before and after the rollback the issues existed.

This weekend the Dell Update tool came up with version 1.3.8 again.
Installing by the toll failed so I downloaded and installed it manually.

After the install I reenabed the Sata controller and set it to ACHI mode.
This time the PCIe SSD is visible to the Windows install and in shows up in the Samsung Magician software as an PCIe NVME device with 10Gb/s. So that's fixed.

As I reenabled the Sata controller the issues with the Keyboard/Touchpad when executing a cold boot or resume from sleep seem to be solved.

The last issue that still exists is the Black screen.
When I close the lid, the laptop stays on, for a while as I'm off for a meeting and come back the screen stays black when I open it.
Only solution is attaching an external monitor, logon and it reconfigures to two screens.
This triggers the laptop screen and I can disconnect the external monitor.

So now the question is, how to fix this.

I've posted on a separate thread, but I'm seeing similar sleep/wake issues with the E5570.   This has nothing do with adding additional hardware though-    Just FYI

The 1.3.6 bios did not show the PCIe device when in ACHI only when sata was disabled.

The black screen stuff work around now if "Click" enter your password and hit enter.

Then use the FN + toggle screen key until the screens turns on so you an continue to work.

Btw, how did you fix Samsung 950Pro to the case/mobo? There seem to be screw hole missing where it should be ...

Solved. I have same setup and same problems. E5570 + custom installed Samsung 950Pro NVMe. Keyboard didn't work on windows login page after hibernate wakeup and sleep wakeups lead to black screen. I'm now on 1.3.8 BIOS and switching SATA to AHCI seems like resolving both problems without impacting drive speed. So thanks for advice!

Now I only need to deal with that high frequency noise coming from motherboard :-(

My laptop came with an M.2 drive so the bracket that you need was already there inclusing the screw.

I do not have the 2.5' tray and hdd cable which I would like to have but cost 72,50 euro's so not going to buy that.

A yeah the COIL WHINE.
Had it really bad in the beginning but it gets better overtime.
Maybe stressing the laptop somehow makes it less.
I run a lab on the laptop, 32Gb so about 10 to 16 vm's.

Updating them at the same time will rise the temp pretty good :d

Hi, I even have newest BIOS 1.06.03, but still got troubles with NVMe. PCIe link is on full speed 8x4 = 32Gbps, but still my disk wont reach full speed in some parameters. I see better performance when SATA is completely switched off in BIOS but then again keyboard is always shut off when waking up from sleep :-( I use USB mouse, but I dont see how this can interfere. Im really wondering why Dell havent fixed that sofar :-(

SATA is set to ACHI.

Are you sure you have an NVME drive? Samsung sells them with different controllers...
And if so, the Samsung NVME 1.1 driver?

At least once a week my TPM module does not start or something and Windows asks me to enter the Bitlocker recovery code. Always nice when your at a customer!!!

USB on the right side seems to be underpowered. I have a Logitech MX wireless mouse, it works fine on other systems and on my laptop it just stutters. Especially if I plug in a device to the 2nd USB port on the right, it's dissconnecting the other USB device every 30 seconds or so. Also transfer speeds are horribly low.
So I use the USB port on the back for USB drives so I have a stable connection and am able to copy my data without interruptions.

For a laptop of now in total 2300 euro's I'm pretty irritated with these stupid defects.
I know one thing for now, this is my 1st and LAST DELL laptop ever.

If they are unable to solve this they just build an inferrior product in my opinion...

Yes, I have Samsung NVMe driver 1.1 and yes I definatelly have NVMe Samsung 950Pro :-)

Which program do u use to tell the PCIe speed? Older version of Samsung Magician reported wrongly. I suggest Samsung magician 4.9.7 or Crystal Disk Info.

Btw, I have the same problems with TPM :-( Both with 1.2 and 2.0 version. I just wrote Dell support again.

the same problem here,

Both Samsung Magician and Crystal Disk Info shows 2 of 4 PCIe lines.

Samsung Magician show genuine Samsung 950PRO 256 MB disk.

I upgraded to newest BIOS, I have installed latest Samsung NVMe driver.

Dell offered me motherboard change to fix noise from MB. They should have the new MB revision.

Please don't do that. I am not sure if that was really a new revision but the moise is much worse now.

Yeah, Dell 'support'... Pretty much the only thing they tell me is that they are not aware of any issues and that I should reinstall and so on. No real solutions here in NLD.

I used Samsung Magician 4.5 and got the 10Gbps connection.

Now I updated to 4.7 and it shows a 32Gbps connection.

Controller driver version is 1.4.7.17

I also have Controller driver version 1.4.7.17 (and NVMe driver 1.1) and interface shows 32Gbps, but the speed Im getting from disk is not really stable and could be much better.

I still have noise coming from mobo when CPU or disk are on high load. I must say it got little better when I got mb hw revision A02 to replace my original A00.

I have just find out fimy MB has A01 revision.

could you please confirm you are having 32/32 Gbps from latest Samsung Magician?

It shows current and maximum possible speed.
