Stuck at "rEFInd-Initializing" after trying to update Seagate HDD firmware
Hi! I recently bought an Inspiron 15 7000 (7559). I went to the "Drivers and Downloads" section of the Dell website for my model and downloaded and installed the latest drivers and updates.
The issue started when I got to the "Seagate ST500LM000/ST1000LM014 Firmware Update" download. I opened the bottom of the laptop and made sure that the update was for my HDD. My model was ST1000LM014 so I downloaded the update "Kahuna_ZPE.exe" and ran it.
It started to run but then stopped at where it said "rEFInd - Initializing" and a bunch of lines saying "Binary is verified by the vendor certificate". I thought maybe it just took time to initialize so I left for a workshop I needed to do at work and asked my wife to see what would happen. 8 hours after when I got home, it was still on the same screen. Now, when I switch it off and on, it always goes back to the same screen.
Has anyone encountered the same issue before and know how to resolve this? Thank you.

Here's what worked for me on Windows 7 Enterprise 64-bit. Good thing I'm familiar with rEFInd EFI boot loader, or I'd still be wondering what to do -- note that booting from a system recovery disc and repairing via command line is futile and a waste of time.
1. From an administrator-elevated CMD.EXE prompt on Windows, run the following command to mount the ESP (EFI System Partition):
mountvol S: /S
2. Change directory to S:\EFI directory, and you will find four directories: Microsoft, Seagate, BOOT, __BOOT (NOTE: double underscore preceeding BOOT).
3. Delete the Seagate directory from S:\EFI\Seagate
4. Delete the BOOT directory from S:\EFI\BOOT (NOTE: the original, unmolested BOOT directory was renamed __BOOT by the Seagate firmware update utility, so this is the jacked-up BOOT directory containing the rEFInd EFI Boot Loader and it can be safely removed).
4. Rename the __BOOT directory to BOOT (no double underscore preceding the name).
5. Reboot the computer. The rEFInd boot loader has been removed.
Hope that's helpful. I reported it to Dell Support today and am reposting here so it helps someone else.

I had the same issue on my Dell 7559 today. When it tried to install the update it seemed to go into a loop with similar info. The only way I got it to proceed was - at the point where it changes screens (on my PC, it changes) a list of options appear. After much trial & error, I found I could move from one selection to another, then make a selection by moving the up/down keyboard arrows and entering a choice. Some of the options led to the "Safe" screen, which I couldn't find a use for. The top listing was the only one that I hit on that went through a cycle, that didn't seem to end correctly, but at least it stopped the loop. I'm sur Dell support is needed to make any sense of this one.
If I learn any more, I'll update the info. Mike

Hi Mike! Yup I eventually was able to boot back to Windows using one of the selections but this Seagate HDD firmware update still doesn't work. Dell needs to fix it, unless we're missing something.

+1 on this, got back to Windows through the load Windows BootMgr option, but that was scary.

Same problem. I have spend 2 hours with somebody of Dell support premium one week ago and he does not succeed to upgrade firmware of my Seagate disk on my Inspiron 17 I7746. He said not to upgrade, but i got time to time a smart alert due to a bugg which is solved by this upgrade !
Dell you have to Fix it quickly !

Ugh, I wish I would have looked this up and seen your responses! I also did the update today and got caught in the same loop, but then I pressed the power button until the computer shut down. When I restarted it, now I'm stuck on the rEFind - Initializing... Binary is verified by the vendor certificate and it doesn't move to the other screens. Any idea of what I can do?

The update has problems. Thankfully, Corey gave the solution to get out of the update loop.
