Use Dell Command | Update to install Dell Thunderbolt™ Dock (TB15) drivers for Latitude E5570 / 7275 / 7370 / Precision 3510 / 5510 / XPS 15-9550 / XPS 13-9350 & XPS 12-9250

Dell provides the Dell Command | Update Application on a business client supported platforms to simplify the BIOS, firmware & driver update experience. This application is located under the "Systems Management" section of the Dell Support website (www.dell.com/support). Be sure to pick your system type from the list or enter your service tag to ensure you get the right version for your system.

  • Install the Dell Command | Update v2.2.0 available for the system in the "Systems Management" section to obtain the latest firmware and drivers.

NOTE: The application allows users to download and install the latest firmware and drivers on their systems, including

  1. System BIOS
  2. Intel Thunderbolt Controller Driver

  5. Realtek USB GBE Ethernet Controller Driver

Other than above automatic installation, it’s recommended that users download and install the Dell Dock Firmware Update utility (expected to be available to download by August 2016) and Intel HD Graphics Driver manually.

Dell Thunderbolt™ Dock (TB15) Installation Guide for Latitude E5570 / Precision 3510

The latest BIOS, drivers and Firmware can be downloaded at the Dell Support website (www.dell.com/support). Dell highly recommends installing the following BIOS / Drivers step by step in the prescribed order to ensure optimal performance. Failure to install BIOS, drivers and Firmware in this document may result in undesirable performance.

  1. Connect the AC adapter to the Dell Thunderbolt™ Dock (TB15) and then connect the Thunderbolt™ 3 (Type-C) connector to the computer.
  2. Search your system model name under Select a Product selection or enter the service tag of your system to locate Drivers & downloads page on the Dell Support website (www.dell.com/support). Change the OS to view all available updates for your system.
  3. Flash the latest Basic Input/Output System (BIOS) available for the system. This is posted in the "BIOS" section.

  3. Then follow the recommended steps of connecting the AC adapter to the TB15 dock first and then attaching the Thunderbolt cable to the computer.
  4. Power on the computer with the docking station connected.

First there is another troubleshooting guide with the order different from this post.  Note that the firmware is updated last in this lDell Support link:

Second, I following the instructions for two XPS 13 9350s and two TB15s.  Both XPS 13s were updated with drivers removed first, and reboots between each install. One XPS cannot communicate with either TB15s and I have ordered a replacement.  The other has intermittent connectivity to USB mouse/keyboard and VGA monitor. Power always seems to work as well as ethernet connectivity. 

I'll wait for a new round of driver updates but if I cannot get an update, I will be returning both TB15s.

I'm Having similar Problems with the WD15 dock. 

That thread/ sticky is closed so am posting here.

I'm also finding that I need to unplug / replug the USB C universal connector to the pc each startup to get the dock to work OK.

And yes have downloaded all the drivers etc. (BTW some on your list of WD15 drivers for Precision 5510 Win7 64 are for an XPS machine and wont install).

Hi,

So after contacting Dell Support, they've sent me a new dock and the result was the same: Unknown device.

I had a Dell engineer take over my screen, go through every step I had already done several times then give up and proposed to escalate the ticket.

Then, I thought it was impossible to make the situation worse so I decided to actually UNINSTALL drivers and see what the outcome would be in the device manager.

First thing I've uninstalled was the ASMedia driver. Then I rebooted and... ***!!!!! :emotion-3:

Everything installing itself like a charm! Looks like the ASMedia drivers version built into Windows 10 pro actually handles everything without the need for extra drivers :emotion-3:

So now I have my TB15 working with USB devices connected to it, and DisplayPort to my Dell monitor.

One thing that still doesn't properly work: NETWORK

The issue seems to be with the way the connections are established between the dock and the laptop, because it doesn't make a difference if I use the built-in ethernet port or an usb3-to-ethernet adapter: it seems to work, connection is established but then if I try to access a network path or an internet page, the adapter resets itself. So basically it's useless... Sometimes it would stay connected for a while but then the download speeds would be way off. When plugging in the usb3-to-ethernet adapter directly on an usb3 port of the laptop itself, it works flawlessly and speeds are gigabit ones.

So definitely there's something wrong with how the dock manages networking.

Any idea for a fix?

I can confirm that using a fan does in fact solve this issue for me. After jumping through the various hoops discussed previously in this thread and others I finally got everything working. Then several days later my monitor connected via DP went to sleep. A co-worker and I got creative with a little USB fan he had and everything has been stable since. 

Maybe Dell should just ship everyone a fan and some rubber bands:

Same problem. The dock disconnects every few seconds, won't ever appear as an approved device after a reboot, the HDMI output has never worked for more than 2 seconds. Looks like I'm going to have to return $7,000 worth of docks... Thanks Dell.

I noticed that also, but the version number is the same as the driver I downloaded a couple of weeks ago.  Even though the "last updated" date has changed, I don't think the file has. 

Not too sure why they have a release date and a last updated date.

Hi Brian,

I am having an issue with the DisplayPort turning off after various lengths of time and I suspect, as others do, that it is due to the dock itself over-heating.

I have NO other problems whatsoever at this point.  Although the fan on the XPS does seem to run more and louder when connected to the dock, but that's not really a problem for me.

Any idea if this is being checked into by the engineers as well?  Will future firmware/driver/BIOS updates address this?

Here's a link to another forum from the same poster.  Great information for your engineers to use.  Seems like if it truly is an overheating issue that they might need to be recalled.  I imagine the only fixes that would work would be to put a fan in the dock, add heat sinks, add venting or all three.  Thoughts?

I have exactly the same situation. Everything worked fine for a few weeks and some day it started, that one monitor connected via DP went to sleep after a few hours of working.

I also recognized, that the dock is becoming quite warm/hot during operation - interestingly it also gets quite warm if nothing is connected to the dock (standby, only connected to power adapter, nothing connected to thunderbolt adapter). After the problem occurs, a short time of cooling down is enough to get the dock working smoothly again....

Thats definitely a problem of the TB15's design - it is getting to hot, so that at least the chip of the DP hub stops working.

My first workaround was to put some small spacers under the dock, so that there is a clearance of about (10mm/0.4") between table and dock. I believe that this solution already decreased the working temperature of the dock, because the air could also flow under the dock. I haven't had any disonnects since doing this workaround but I have to test a few days more...

Why do the drivers show an updated date but are the same version?  Are there changes to them?

Has anyone been able to get the dock to work with your laptop top lid closed?

I have an XPS 15 9550 / 3 X 24" U2415, TB15 Dock / Windows 10x64 Enterprise

I have all 3 monitors / USB / and network working and stable though a 8-10 hour work day, but only if I keep my laptop lid open. 

Any ideas?

This is ridiculous.  What a terrible product launch.  This must be why these still aren't listed as docking solutions on their website, apparently their paying customers are the pilot group.  This is so frustrating!

Well it certainly isn't "working as designed" if you need to put an external fan underneath it. I guess it's just me but if I had to do that to get it to work I would send it back.

FWIW we are having same problems with WD-15.

In my case no display problems , but any USB plugged in  doesnt work ... unless the main dock to PC USB C plug is pulled and re-plugged.

C'Mon Dell we love your stuff with our $$$ but how about some love back ???

It definitely has a pretty severe design flaw, on top of all the crazy driver hoops you have to  jump through just to have a chance of it actually functioning correctly. But its the only way for me to power dual 4K monitors so for now I'm just putting up with it. Hopefully they fix it and I can exchange it for a unit that actually works.
