Yes, this drive is horrible.  Everyone on the forums seems to know that the problem is the firmware.  Dell shipped out a bunch of drives with firmware .99 and yet, the firmware that actually works is 1.03.  It would be nice if Dell would just recognize this and put the firmware up for download rather then making us call and struggle with tech support to get a new drive.  I've heard plenty of tales of how the firmware is being tested, but if Dell is shipping out drives with this firmware, then obviously it works...or at least works better then the .99 firmware.  Really I find the testing excuse to be a bit lame since their testing failed miserably with the .99 firmware.

This is a huge deal and all I see Dell doing about it is alienating their customers with horrible support and bad excuses in dealing with their own mistakes.  I paid good money for my computer and wouldn't mind having it work like it was advertised and having it supported with competence.

Hop to it Dell, get things moving with this.

Rattle,

You have made me smile...

I have had an almost identical experience with my Philips SDVD6004, and the support from Dell was pitiful. Just wanted to add my name to the list of disgruntled customers!

I have a Dell Dimension 4600C with the Philips SDVD6004 DVD burner.  I've now spent over 3 hours on the phone with their technical support and they have finally told me that I'll need to buy a new drive (since my warranty expired a couple of months ago).  In the same breath as telling me that I'd have to buy a new drive, they tried to say it shouldn't be a big deal because 'the drives are pretty cheap these days!'

The issue I'm having is that I have never been able to burn a DVD.   I've tried multiple DVD+R and DVD+RW discs (a very expensive experience). I can't write to CD-RW either.  CDR is the only thing working.

I've downloaded the latest 1.06 firmware and this still has not resolved my issue.  Can anyone tell me what their problems with the drive was and if the 1.06 firmware ever addressed their issues?!'
