Replacing Motherboard - Dell 15R Inspiron N5010

Hi there,

My Dell Inspiron laptop had an issues the other day which might to get a blue screen of death and then crash. I since tried to turn the laptop back on however, it was getting 8 beeps and staying on a black screen. Sometime it would boot and login before the black screen would appear.

Usually, 8 beeps would mean the display has gone however, after further testing and research i feel that the motherboard needs replacing. I am therefore looking to replace the motherboard however, I'm not sure which one to get. The part number for the one I have now is: 0VX53T but I am unable to find this anywhere. I've seen one on eBay (part number: Y6Y56) - would this be compatible? Here is the link to the one I've seen:

Thanks,

Hi priypriy,

We need to isolate if the issue is with the LCD screen or system board. I would suggest you to connect the system to an external display to check if the system is able to project on it.

Also, Please private message us the system service tag so that I can check the system configuration and let you know the part number. To send a private message, click on my name and send private message.

Hi Ravi,

Sorry I forgot to add that I did try the laptop with an external display but projected over to the external display. I will send over the tag number now.

Thanks for the help.

Hi Ravi,

Sorry there was a typo. It didn't project over to the external display. In this case, would it be a motherboard issue?

Hi priypriy,

If you are able to project the system to an external display then its an issue with the LCD screen. Please contact our expired warranty service at 0844 338 1000 for LCD screen repair.

It could still be a display cable issue - that would be the first thing to replace.  Any more than that (i.e., a bad display panel or a bad mainboard) would lead to the same:  replace the system.  This one is too old and low-end to justify the cost of a replacement board.

Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately, replacing the system isn't a option at the moment. Therefore I'm looking to repair it. I think replacing the display cable will be best start. Failing this, I may look to replace the main system board. The current configuration for my system has the part no: 0VX53T for the main system board but I am unable to find this anywhere. I've seen a system board that is suitable from my laptop but has a different part number: Y6Y56 - would this be compatible?

There are basically two boards - one has Intel video, and the other AMD.  I believe yours has AMD - meaning you can use any of the N5010 boards having an AMD video chip.

You can also install an Intel-GPU board - which will likely be cheaper and more readily available but will need to purchase a new heatsink assembly (the one from the Intel board won't fit the AMD and vice-versa).

Thanks for the above, it this really good to good.

With regards to the heatsink, I'm not sure which one with the board I'm looking to get. The board I've seen is PN 0Y6Y56 - which I believe has an Inter video chip. I am just unsure about the correct heatsink I need

Another board I've seen is PN 6V89F which has a ATI Graphics chip which could be suitable
