NK760 Access light blinking while no programs running

Question

I just installed a Hitachi NK760 in my Inspiron 8500 with Windows XP Pro and it works great.    Problem is, the disk access light goes on/off about every two to four seconds and there are not application programs running.  There is a pattern to the access.  Obviously, there are several MS processes runnning all the time whether I am running an application program or not.  Did virus scan and it came back negative.  What concerns me is that this unnecessary disk access might shorten the life of the hard drive.  And, it is annoying! The HD does not do this in the other computers that I own.  Is there a diagostic program that will tell me which process/program might be causing this unnecessary disk access? Thanks in advance
