When attempting to burn Ritek DVD+RW using the NEC 5100A drive, the drive recognises unformatted discs. However, when the disc has been burnt / formatted then the drive claims that there is no media present.
CD-Rs seem to burn ok, and by the look of the disc the drive has burnt something onto it. As I don't have ready access to another DVD+RW drive, I can't tell if the drive is trashing the discs, which would defeat the point of DVD+RW.
I have similar problems. Occasionally my drive, NEC ND-5100A will refuse to recognize DVD disks that play okay on other players, yet will continue to play CDs and CD-ROMs normally.
Well, after a few long phone calls with Tech support, I now have a replacement ND-5100A.
It remains to be seen whether this works correctly, as I have had Nero fail halfway through writing a disc complaining of a power calibration error. Not sure if it is the drive or the media.
Does anyone know a list of media that works with this drive, as I have now tried Bulkpaq, Sony, Imation + Ritek?
Dell says that they're sending me a new drive as well.
As for the problem of failing to read a disc near the end, I suspect that the drive has a problem reading even slightly unbalanced discs that other drives can tolerate. I believe that the end of disc is located near the outer edges of the physical disc, which wobbles more when the disc is unbalanced, thus making it hard or impossible for the drive to read it.

hey, ive got exactly the same problem:
1. initially my dvd rw drive on my i8600 did not read blank cd's. then i disabled the drive and enabled it again and now it started to read fine.
2. now the next problem im having is that my dvd drive dosent seem to recognise the last 1/4 of a cd??
- when playing music cd's it dosent read the last few tracks
-when installing a game it cant install the last bits, it jus stops and u can hear it spinning and then it just hangs.
-burning dvd's seem to also take quite a bit of time especially towards the end.
-watching dvds= it lags and skips towards the end of the movie
so now basically i cant listen to the last few songs of any audio cd, and i cant install any games etc and dvds lag and skips towards the end
Any ideas guys??
