New Kaby Lake XPS 13: coil whine

Hi everybody,

After I was so happy to have found a Linux supported laptop with very good specifications, I had to return the brand new 9350 QHD+ because of the coil whine noise. It was a real pity because I was in love with the rest, but it was simply too loud.

Now I am thinking again what to buy.

Is the design of the new XPS 13 Kaby Lake (9360) solving the coil whine problem?

If yes, I would prefer to wait and support Dell buying the DE.

I know this is not a hardware forum, but I hope that someone from Dell can give me an asnwer here. Thank you very much in advance!

Hi, is the A02 part replacement on stock now (mine 9360 motherboard is A00)? I also have the same problem and kind of in a hurry in need of this laptop, so is there any way to make the replacement process as fast as possible?

I purchased mine one month ago and coil whine is very noticeable from time to time. I have  also noticed that sound is not very clear, a lot of crispy noise when watching videos on more than 60% volume.

Any news on that Motherboard replacement? I am based in UK.

@Barton George

I sent you a PM. There is a replacement about to be sent out to me. Please confirm that it has the A02 per the initial ticket. Thanks !

Hi @Ervytis,

What your describing could actually be a couple of things.  The best way to find out whats actually going on is for you to start a case in the UK so that we can track it. Here's the link www.dell.com/.../dynamic

Let me know if you run into any roadblocks.

Thanks!

I am two days away from the return window on my XPS 13 9360.    The coil whine is present, but not audible unless in quiet environments.   Does it get louder for anyone?  Does anyone actually have a completely coil whine-free 9360?

is that released by Dell? If so, why isn't it on the Dell website?

I am in the same situation as you are. I don't mind a tiny bit of noise but the coil whine once is there it is very annoying and it gets on my nerves, reduces my focus and productivity. I am planning on getting a dock to work with external monitor + mouse/keyboard but I am not sure how that affects the coil whine situation and there is not officially supported thunderbolt/usb-c dock just yet.

Will the recently released configurations with i7-7560U processor (e.g. cnx93618) automatically come with the new mainboard or is the board independent of the CPU and old board revisions from stock will be used?

Are they going to extend the support + guarantee if new motherboard is replaced ?

Support keeps postponing the replacement of my machine or refuse to refund. Now they asked me if the sound comes from keyboard letters S or D ... the least I can say is that APPLE would have replaced the machine in no time. But DELL , they keep asking me stupid questions in order not to replace or refund.

On top of that I have discovered that the machine has wifi drops here and then, while everyone else in the company has no drop offs. More specifically, the killer wifi adapter does not even find networks occasionally !!

Just a reminder about my coil whine noise problem in this 3 min video

@Justin C

I have sent you a friend request about my Dell XPS 13 9360, could you please confirm so we can start a dialogue about my coil whine issue? I have tried taking with Dell support but they haven't got back to me. I have the A00 motherboard.

Lucklily I got a replacement / refund order from Dell.

I would like to give one more try to the xps 13, but now I am wondering which motherboard has fixed this issue. And how can I be sure that if I get a laptop this month will not have the same issue. I would be happy to get some feedback from people that bought their machines quite recently

Hi Barton,

Could you please update us on the status of revision A02?

A Dell rep in the German Dell support community has stated that they are now starting to receive the new motherboards in their support centre. Is this also the case for the UK?

Here is the thread from the German community:

Thank you.

I have a case open in terms of this coil whine issue, however does anybody know what's the policy in terms of a refund? Based on the feedback so far no one seems to have managed to fix this with replacing parts or engineers on site support.

I believe I've received my device on 2nd of February but ths is just getting a bit annoying now.
