New XPS 13 (2016) & VMWARE Workstation

Hi,

I am about to purchase a new XPS 13 (2016) with a i7-7500U and install VMWARE Workstation. I have read this may not be possible? Can anyone let me know their experience with this.

Thanks, Phil

My response is probably too late for you, but my experience of virtual machines on an XPS 13 is worth knowing about for others who may find your post via Google.

I purchased the Dell XPS 13 (Windows 10) at the end of 2016. I upgraded the memory to 16GB as I knew I would want to run virtual machines. I use VMWare Workstation on a Dell Precision M4700 workstation and have been very pleased. A Dell XPS 13 is not an M4700, but running a couple of lightweight VMs does not seem too much to ask.

I did install and install Hyper-V, but it was a non-starter. The screen flicker on the XPS 13, with Hyper-V was unacceptable.

I installed VMWare Workstation 12 and everything was working okay. The VMs I run are not particularly large, or resource intensive and everything worked as expected. My problems started when Windows 10 upgraded to version 1703, Build 15063.138 (the latest version). Now I get out of memory crashes with either of the two VMs. Minimizing the amount of memory Workstation 12 uses, and the memory used by each virtual machine, allows me to recover more gracefully from the crash. If I allocate too much memory I have to power down and restart.

There is a thread on the VMWare forum that indicates a memory leak when printer sharing is enabled with Workstation. Hopefully it will fixed.
