Dell Inspiron 5552 not turning on

Hello everyone. I recently purchased a refurbished Dell laptop. It is an Inspiron 5552 I started using around January 1st. 3 or 4 days ago, the keyboard stopped working. I decided to shut it down and turn it back on thinking it would be a simple fix, but I had issues when I tried to turn it back on.

I got messages at the startup that would differ between "the battery cannot be identified" or "the number of watts/volts cannot be identified". I was getting the orange and white light flashing. I wouldn't be able to bypass that screen though. Eventually, I got lucky and the laptop booted normally. as I thought, my laptop was fully charged and there seemed to be no problem. However, the keyboard still wasn't working. On the dell website it said that I should uninstall the keyboard driver and restart the laptop, so thats what I did. When I tried to restart the laptop, it would get stuck at the Dell screen and it wouldn't load up. Lately, I haven't even been lucky enough to get the Dell screen. The laptop just tries to start up, shuts down, starts up, shuts down, and then the 7 beeps start. I might get lucky and get a lit up blank screen, but thats it.

I tried the towel/blanket method but the laptop does not even heat up. It takes 45 minutes for it to get even remotely warm. From what I've read from looking at many pages, the success rate of that method is very high but I can't get it to work. Does anyone have any suggestions? I have a warranty until June but I haven't yet contacted Dell and I'd really like to be able to log on to be able to back up my files. Does anyone know what would even lead to this series of events? I have avoided doing anything that requires disassembly of the laptop because I have no experience in it but if it isn't as hard as I think it is I can give it a shot. Thanks in advance.

Hi there, can you tell me what the towel/blanket method is and where you saw this as a fix? Is this similar to what some people were doing when they were trying to heat up their Xbox 360s to try get the system to fix itself from the Red Error light? If so... I do not recommend doing this on your system, especially since you're still in warranty.

Disassembly isn't too bad and I can link the Service Manual w/ steps, but before we I that or you take it apart, can you try running Diagnostics on the system? You can enter diagnostics by pressing F12 at start up (at the Dell screen) and then selecting Run Diagnostics. I would run the full set.

It sounds like this could be related to a bad board, bad power adapter, or maybe a battery, but let's run the diagnostics first and see if it shows anything.

Best regards,

Brad

hello brad. sorry for my late response. I cannot get to the dell screen, thats the problem. during the process the whole screen is black. during my earlier tries the dell screen would come up, but it hasnt come up since the first or second day.  the only way to get to the dell screen was to use the blanket method, but the laptop only actually turned on once and it was slower than normal and the audio wasnt working properly. the keyboard also wasnt working.

the towel/blanket method is the same thing as the xbox 360 method. I've seen it on youtube videos and almost every thread ive looked at in attempt to solve this problem. for other people, it only takes 10-20 minutes to get their laptop heated up. some say to turn it on ten seconds after it's heated and some people say let it cool down completely. the one time it worked for me was when I had it in the blanket for 2-3 hours because my laptop hasnt been heating up as fast and I had to do it while it was still hot. if I let it cool down I wont even be able to reach the dell screen.

I was hoping the method would work because I have very important things on that laptop that need to be saved. I have not contacted dell through phone yet because I believe that if they were  to take the laptop in they would have to erase everything. what do you recommend I do?

thanks in advance

Remove the hard drive from the system and mount it in an external case - back up what you need.

Example:

www.newegg.com/.../Product.aspx

Then proceed with a warranty repair.

I have the same problem.  I also get 7 beeps.  The power LED flashes on briefly before the beeps but the screen stays dark.  Did you have any luck fixing your problem?  Dell says it is the CPU but my problem occurred immediately after I did an update back in July, about 2 weeks after my warrantee expired.

Seven beeps is a mainboard or (less likely) CPU failure - on just about everything built in the last few years, the CPU and mainboard are a single unit - you'l need to replace both together.
