I want to upgrade my RAM

Hi guys.

I have an inspiron 531 with a mere 1GB ram.. so i googled ram for this device and found DDR2 PC2-5300 and DDR2 PC2-6400 listed as suitable for my PC.

Which one should i go for and are they interchangeable ie,. can you use one of 5300 and one of 6400 ? Thanks

any time you mix speeds of ram the faster chips get slowed down to the slower chips speed.  in your case the 6400mhz ram will slow down to match the 5300mhz

6400 will work with all CPUs;  5300 is probably fine (the memory speed is controlled by the CPU).  DDR-2 is more expensive now than newer DDR3 or DDR4, as it is obsolete.

I currently have 2x512mb 5300's, so i'll go for 2x1gb 5300s so it runs smoothly.

I found them for cheap ( £10 each )

thanks
