SD card can't be read or formatted Win 10 - XPS 9100

I can't read or format my SD card when I insert it in the builtin card reader that came with my PC. When I put it in, File Explorer opens and prompts me the format the card. If I try to format, I get a message indicating Windows was unable to complete the format.

I know the card is good because I can see its content on my laptop. I have checked the card reader driver and it is the most recent. When I insert my card in the card reader, the LED turns on, indicating an SD card is present in the reader. However, my card is missing when I open Disk Management.

I have googled for a solution, but none of them work.

Can someone help me?

Thanks in advance.

YVES BEAUPRE,

Your system needs the Windows 10 drivers for the card reader. That is why it is not seen in device manager. Unfortunately, there are no Windows 10 drivers for the 9100 from Dell.

Hi Jesse,

My card reader worked before in Windows 10.

Because my C drive crashed, I reinstalled Win7 on my new drive however I didn't go through the whole motion of installing Win7 until last update. As soon as I had a running system I upgraded to Win10 ver 1703, witch is the one I am running now.

It is running fine with all my applications and the only problem I have is my card reader. All my drivers are uptodate including the one for my card reader I downloaded from this address:

www.realtek.com.tw/.../downloadsView.aspx

Do you have a suggestion that could help me other than a complete Win7 reinstall and Win10 upgrade later on.

Thanks,

If I'm reading your post correctly, your computer did not have Windows 10 1703 before the HDD crash?  If so it might have something to do with 1703.  It seems every new Windows version brings with it new driver issues.  If you downloaded the appropriate drivers directly from RealTek and it is not working, try uninstalling the drivers completely and then re-installing them again.

Hi Jesse,

Thanks for you reply.

When my HDD crashed, I was running Win10 version 1703. Note I skipped installing the first release of Win10 (ver 1607). I jumped immediately to ver 1703.

To make my PC run, I quickly reinstalled Win7, witch was the OS than came with my PC and upgraded to Win10 version 1703 without going to the most recent/latest version of Win7.

Never the less, I tried your suggestion: I uninstalled my device (card reader) including the driver. I then reinstalled the Realtek driver but I am still having the same problem. When I insert my SD card into the reader, I am prompted to format it and if I try to format it, I get a message indicating that Windows was unable to format it.

Are you aware of a patch that could fix this?

Thanks in advance for your support.
