Just to clarify, we are talking about notebook sized drives right? Otherwise, yes you can pick-up cheap desktop equivalent drives from just about anywhere. If your looking at buying new notebook form factor CD/DVD drives directly from the manufacturer, or OEM, you won't find much at all since all the major drive makers are in the business of supplying the notebook manufacturers and not the aftermarket consumer. There are alot of used older technology drives available from E-Bay, good luck on your search.
Other than E-Bay, good luck on finding notebook drives cheaper than what is offered at Dell's Home and Home Office catalog sales. There isn't much available aftermarket for notebook optical drives.
You guys really need to check out the optical drive scene on ebay... there are MUCH more OEM drives than their are drives for specific notebooks. For example, I am pretty sure that some dell notebooks use a samsung combo drive, oem part number SN-324. The OEM drive goes for under $50, and there are usually at least five auctions going on at any time for these drives! The only reason I don't buy one is that it appears my faceplate wouldnt match up with it; the button seems to be located in a different position.
Well of course I was going to buy it on ebay.... But you are incorrect, I have noticed that when just looking around, OEM drives are MUCH cheaper than those offered for a specific notebook. Most likely because most people don't understand the concept of OEM's. So if anyone can provide me with the OEM part numbers it would be greatly appreciated.
The Hitachi/LG CD-RW/DVD-Rom combo currently being shipped manufacturers model number is HL-DT-ST GCC-4241, as far as the faceplate issue is concerned, I'm not sure how the arrangement is on the drive you currently have, but on the aforementioned combo drive, the center of the open button is approximately 1 11/16" from the right edge of the faceplate, slightly above the verticle centerline of the faceplate. The light and emergency open hole are just about on the verticle centerline of the drive faceplate with light being just about 2" from the right edge of the faceplate and the emergency access being about 1 1/4" from the right edge.
I also had the QSI model CD-RW/DVD-Rom Combo at one point in time (SBW-242), I don't have it available for measurement, but if I remember correctly, the open button was located more or less on the center of the faceplate, both horizontally and vertically.
excellent, sounds like im on my way to getting a new drive... but how bout the GCC-424
0N? i have found PLENTY of GCC-4241N, but i mean, if the GCC-4240N is the same drive for all practical purposes, that would effectively double my options, meaning a cheaper price in the end.
Thank you, your post is EXTREMELY helpful. The dimensions of the faceplate seem to match mine exactly. I have been able to find MANY of the drives on ebay, all for very reasonable prices (especially compared to drives which are suited for my specific laptop). The only thing is most of the drives that I am finding are model no. GCC-4241
N, which I am assuming is the same model, at least I hope. If you know otherwise please let me know.

Just ran a quick search on e-bay for the 4x DVD+R burner I bought last week from Dell for $200 and it came up empty.
