Spybreak,

Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.

Firmware updates will be available on the Dell web site, under the Downloads tab. Change the autoplay settings by doing the following according to Windows help:

  1. Open My Computer.
  2. Under ight-click the device you want, such as a digital camera or CD-ROM drive, and then click Properties.
  3. On the AutoPlay tab, click the multimedia content type you want to change.
  4. Under Actions, click the action you want Windows to perform when it detects the media type you selected.

Notes

To open My Computer, click Start, and then click My Computer.
Your storage device must be attached to your computer for it to appear in the My Computer folder.

Same problem here!!!!

Come on Dell, it's not 10 years ago, it is easy to get a cdrw that can handle these things.

when is the firmware coming?

I am going to try and find a firmware upgrade, I will post it here if lucky.

Bob,

It's not a problem with Autoplay. And I thought that was pretty clear, since many people have the same issue.

The drive does not even recognise that a new disc has been inserted.
If I go to 'My Computer' and double click the drive, I get a file listing from the PREVIOUS disc that was in there. The drive is not functioning correctly.

I contacted DELL Australia support, and got similar responses.
Try booting a CD - Check.
Try getting rid of LowerFilter/UpperFilter - Check.

They asked me to find an option in Nero that 'allows other PCs to read the CDR'.
Yeah, that'll magically fix it! :-)

Do the problems still occur? Yes.

1) Can I run new programs I just purchased? No. Obviously, there's something about the CD protection that's on these discs that the drive cannot handle.

2) Can I swap discs and expect it to work? No. This is the weirdest issue of all. Why doesn't the drive refresh? Seems like a firmware problem to me.

3) Can I burn a BIN/CUE image under any program? No. I think Track At Once/Disc At Once may be broken on this drive. And I eagerly await a fix.

Other than some glaring problems that should have been picked up by any QA process, it's a great laptop! :-)
hehe.

Well I'm gonna add my two cents here as well, I have been patiently waiting and browsing this forum for a fix or a firmware update but I have not seen one yet. I have this same samsung cdrw/dvd drive on my two month old laptop and I have noticed since day one that it seems like when I stick a cd in the tray it's a roll of the dice as to whether it will get recognized. The drive will spin up after I insert it but windows just doesn't or the drive just doesn't refresh to recognize there is a disk inserted. Majority of the time I have to reboot the pc and if the disk is allready in then I have to go to my computer and double click on the D: drive and then sometimes find the file I need (like setup.exe), this is rediculous way of loading a cd. My 6 year old dimension desktop with it's original dvd player smokes this thing.

So please tell us dell that there is a firmware coming because auto play is not the issue here, I should not have to tell windows that if I put an audio disk in then media player opens up, if it's dvd then msi movie player opens up, if blank cdrw then nero opens up, this is not the problem, the problem is when you put disk in windows doesn't even show a disk has been installed.

I have the Samsung drive and there are no newer updates--it's at the latest revision. It also burns bin/cue files that can't be read on any machine. There's definitely a problem with this drive.

"I cannot burn BIN/CUE images properly with the drive. They burn fine, and Nero says the image was burnt successfully, but the CD is coastered. It cannot be read on any CDROM drive."

I have the EXACT same problem. The newest firmware too. Nero (or CDR-win) burns, says it's done, and then the disc just seems to be empty (but not writable, of course). Burning hybrid discs is a complete failure as well.

Carpet Crawler:

Could you please tell us what make/model the new drive is?

Have you thoroughly tested it's burning features?

Thanks

I had the same issue, you can either make a new user name if you only have one (weird I know but trust me) or download all the windows updates that microsoft offers, mine works every disk every time.

The replacement Drive is a HL Data Storage CD-RW/DVD, Model GCC-424ON. I have burnt .bin, audio, vcd, svcd and ISO's. ALL PERFECT !!!

Write speed  24X.  All in all very pleased. DVD playback excellent with both original and DVD-R. access times reasonable for a laptop.

I use Plextor Writers in my Desktop and a Sony 500AX for DVD, so would normally use them as my main writers, but this drive is more than OK ' on the go'.

Well, I didn't think trying another user would make any difference. And it didn't. Another coaster created by the wonderful drive.
I already had all the latest WinXP updates installed.

Anyway, I did some more testing.

I tried burning a KNOPPIX (www.knoppix.net) ISO image (not BIN/CUE) with the drive. Again, it was coastered.
I then booted into Linux, and tried to burn the same ISO from there using 'cdrecord'.
Surprisingly, it was a successful burn. No coaster created.

During the burn under Linux, I noticed that the kernel was receiving a whole bunch of bad ATAPI responses from the drive at the beginning of the burn. So this may be the reason it doesn't work under WinXP, although I'm not sure.

I'm going to buy a CDRW disc so I stop wasting my TDK Gold CDRs, and I'll try a BIN/CUE burn under Linux.

So the hardware may be doing something strange, but not strange enough to stop it from functioning.
Of course, using Linux to burn my CDs solves one out of three issues.

The drive still does not refresh under WinXP. I havn't done extensive testing under Linux yet, but I will later.
I also can't play these games for some reason. The drive probably can't handle the CD protection. And if it can't, it shouldn't be on the market.

Anyway, that's it so far. I might just ask for a replacement drive and forget about it. Probably the quickest option.

Oh, and Dell should probably acknowledge that there's something wrong with it.
Because there is.

Dell is sending me a replacement drive for my SN-324B.

The whole CD burning function of it is broken to say the least.

Spybreak,

Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.

The best way to verify if there is a hardware issue with a component is to run the Dell diagnostic test on it.  You might check to see if a firmware update is available for the drive.

My new Inspiron 8500 has Win XP installed, service pack, latest drivers, Bios A03.

I've tested the dvd/cd recorder burning 2 avi files with Nero 5.5.10.42 (latest ver) at 24x speed, disc-at-once, Mode 1 and at 80/85% of recording, it as failed. I've started copy again: it as failed at 80/85%

I've started a copy again with simulation: around at 80/85% speed decrese from 24X at 19x... is possible that HD isn't defraged, ok.. but a buffer underrun tecnology like BURN PROOF or JustLink is needed for this! It has failed again. Then.. where's Buffer Underrun Protection? Well... I have suspected that it does not have no buffer underrun technology.

I see that it's a SAMSUNG CDRW/DVD SN-324B, firmware U102 (latest), Version Ex.: DEL. To detect model and firmware rev. you can use Nero InfoTool or INQUIRY (official samsung software). You can download it here: http://www.samsungodd.com/eng/LiveUpdate/FWvercheck/FWvercheck.asp and you can see also:

"Version EX Code: The Samsung only supports the firmware of the products has the codes shown in below. If the code isn't in the table, it is a product made by OEM, so check it with manufacture-company from that a computer is purchased."

Well! We go to support.dell.com to find a new firmware and..... there isn't :(

I've read on documentation about this CDR on Dell site. Here http://docs.euro.dell.com/docs/storage/p50705/en/specs.htm there are specifications and you can read that this model has buffer underrun tecnology, but isn't reported if this tecnology is Burn Proof or Justlink.

http://docs.euro.dell.com/docs/storage/p50705/en/intro.htm Here is reported:

Software support
• Roxio Easy CD Creator
• Power DVD & Win DVD
• Music Match & Sound Blaster S/W

I've installed Easy CD Creator (original software in bandle with inspiron 8500), I have tried again to burn two avi files, and it fail again. With Nero InfoTool show me under "Supported Write Features" that Buffer Underrun Protection is supported and if I use Nero to burn a CD, there is options JustLink that I can flag or not. When I start recording it show me something that "JustLink Activated.. start recording at 24x.. ecc...", but... if it fail... where is this JustLink!?

Here http://www.samsung.com/Products/CDDVD_Writer/COMBOSlim/CDDVD_Writer_COMBOSlim_SN_324B.htm we can see:

Features

CD-RW and DVD-ROM in one mechanism
Adopting JustIink (Buffer Under Run Proof Technology)
  Supporting DVD-R/RW formats read
  Supporting Ultra DMA 33 Mode

In the end, I think that this samsung does not  work correctly!! Tomorrow I call Dell to tolk about this. If someone has find a solution or has some experiences about this, reply this post. Thanks all
