Pretty much all of the drives make this sound, it's the laser zipping around from the outside ring of the disc to the inside of the disc, etc. When you start burning a disc, the laser first examines the dis. Near the end of burning the disc, the laser goes back to the inner ring to 'finalize' the disc. This is all normal. If you listen to a desktop drive u can hear this also, but the sound is insulated a lot more because the drives are a lot bigger and have more layers of material to block the sound from the inside of the PC to your ear.

Other times when you might hear the laser movements:
- Skipping back and forth between chapters while playing DVDs (maybe even when you play CDs)
- Running 2 install programs off of a disc at the same time (this really slows down the install time of the programs and probably increases ware on the dvd drive).
- Running an install program and copying large files from a disc at the same time.

Basically any operation where you make windows try to read from 2 different places on the disc at once. Think of yourself as a DVD drive and a book as a disc. If page 5 has a program you want to install and page 230 has a big file you want to copy at the same time, you'd be flipping back and forth between page 5 and 230 all the time. If you do them one at a time then it's not only faster, but it's quieter and causes less ware.

hi thankz for your excellent explanation. It clarify a lot. Thankz again. By the way, i used to have DVD+RW 4X by Hitachi and the sound of the screeching when burning is not as loud, very soft copared to the current 8X DVD+RW by NEC...can you explain the case?

Hitachi products in general use quiet parts, and they're also more expensive. It just depends on the motor they use in the drive I guess. If it's REALLY loud then maybe there is a problem. I have a NEC 4x burner and I notice the noise more than the Phillips 2.4x burner I used to have, but it's not enough to bother me. The NEC burner is way way better than the Phillips that it replaced :D

The phillips was quiet but after about 6 months I started to have problems with it so I asked if I could have it replaced with an NEC one that I heard about. So far the NEC one has been perfect and there have been no problems. My desktop computer also has an NEC CD-RW in it and it's been going strong for a few years now :)

I always thought of NEC as a good brand, and they're always coming out with the new technologies first (they're the first to bring out dual layer laptop dvd burners and I think desktop dvd burners too). I think they're made more for function than fashion, or in this case, low noise level. They aren't cheap products if that's what I thought that I meant.

so are you saying that even though NEC is more noisy than the others, but NEC is more durable in some sense?
