Problem booting up (X51 R2)
Hello,
I have an Alienware X51 R2 and it had worked wonders for a couple of years.
A couple months ago it started to fail: it booted up, immediately shut down by itself and on again, and off again, and so on until I powered it down by pressing for 10 seconds the power button.
That started to happen on rare occasions, but were becoming ever so frequent.
This week I have been getting 3-4 variations of Blue Screen of Deaths, and two days ago I got 3 messages saying the memory had changed and to reboot if I didn't do anything.
Once I managed to turn it on and get into my browser and use it for about 5 minutes it gives me no problems at all throughout an entire day, but it's increasingly harder to get to that point.
I already have it some internal cleaning (although fearful of doing anything incorrectly wasn't too thorough) and was advised to change my graphics card by a friend, saying that would fix it.
Before investing in one I need to know, would that fix it? Or what is the recommended course of action?

Try resetting some components like the RAM and the Video Card. If the issue persists, send me a private message with the service tag.

I encountered the same symptoms in my x51 r2 recently (immediately shut down by itself and on again, and off again then messages saying the memory had changed sometimes). I just reattached/swapped my existing 2x 4GB ram and it became ok, hope it helps.

Hi,
Try running an ePSA/Diagnostic test on the system, click here to view a Dell article that explains how to run this test, also run the extended memory test at the end. Let me know if you receive any errors.

I tried to do the ePSA about 10 times and the computer froze every time, all of them while doing different tests on the memory part.
One time it randomly shut off before that part and the problem continued until I moved the case and it managed to start again to the point where I could do the ePSA test.
Today I started the online quick diagnostic and it froze during a video showing a pipe (only test finished at that time was about the cd stuff). I started to do some single tests, starting with the video one (which included the pipe) and everything was okay. Should I keep testing a specific component?

I re-setted the memory cards and it started working great again.
While opening it I noticed that the video card wasn't like the video said as both cables were disconnected while the video said one should be connected. No place to connect them to either. Is this normal?
