M17XR4 Upgrade

Hi there,

I currently own an M17XR4 alienware laptop with 32G RAM, i7 3630QM @ 2.40GHz CPU, Nvidia 660M graphics card and 1600x900 display.

I want to upgrade the graphics card to an Nvidia 780M and the display to 1920x1080.

I have 2 questions:

1) will the 780M run in my setup and what if anything do i need to do extra apart from installing the card and installing the drivers?

2) i'm looking at a 120Hz 3D 1920x1080 display screen. Will this run in my system seeing as my current display is only 60Hz and if so, what extra steps do I need to do in order to make it work.

Best Regards

The drivers for the 4GB version should work fine. You can download them from NVIDIA directly.

Hello,

Regarding the video card upgrade inquiry, here is the list of video cards that we’ve certified to work on this system:

  • nVidia  GTX 660M
  • nVidia  GTX 675M
  • nVidia  GTX 680M
  • AMD Radeon 7970M

About the screen, this unit does have option for 17.3-inch FHD TL 120 Hz WLED with NVIDIA 3D vision support. That being said, the connectors for it are different. Also, we do not recommend or assist with such upgrade due to the complexity of the replacement.

Hi Alex,

Thanks for the reply.

On your advice I will not go for the 3D display just the normal 1920x1080.

Re: the graphics card, i will also take your recommendations on the GTX680M.

From what I can see, there are 2 models floating about, the Dell one with 2G VRAM and the other one with 4G VRAM (not sure of the make).

Can both be used in my setup without issues?

Also is the 680M a significant better performer than the 660M?

Best Regards

The one we have certified is the 2GB version. You can compare the two cards through online benchmarks and see what you think.

Thanks Alex,

I realize that the 2G version is the certified one but what I wanted to know is the 4G version also plug and play, ie don't need to mess around with modded drivers and such.

Because let's face it, 4G is better than 2G :)

Best Regards
