Dell did not validate the use of a secondary hard drive on the Inspiron 2500 system.

I have spoken to Origin Storage who supply the Dell approved 60GB media bay hdd and they say that the part is compatible. However i have the same problem - I have to remove the CD-ROM drive in order for the multibay to be found.

I have searched this forum for my situation and I haven't really found it, so I am going to ask my question - please excuse me if this has already been addressed.  I recently purchased a 40 GB hard drive and modular bay caddie from Drive Solutions for my daughters Inspiron 2500.  When I insert the caddy the computer does not recognize it anywhere.  It doesn't show up in My Computer, the device manager, the BIOS, Computer Management, nowhere.  I realize that it probably needs to be formatted, but I can't if it isn't recognized.  I saw that some people needed to remove the CD drive so I did that and it still was not recognized.  I also checked to make sure the hard drive was in the caddie upside down.  I all came already assembled and it looks like the hard drive is indeed in upside down.  I read the post about the 2nd hard drive not been approved for the 2500 by Dell, so I also tried to see if my husband's Inspiron 8100 could use it.  It also was not recognized anywhere on that computer.  When I went into setup on the 8100 it said that there was a device in the modular bay, but that it couldn't do anything with it.  It suggested that it was not connecting properly.  Is there something I am doing wrong, or is there something wrong with the hard drive?
