Problem burning w/cdrw/dvd combo drive

Question

HELP! I have only had my computer a couple of months and previously had no problem burning cds however as of late...it ejects halfway through and the info I get is that there may be something on the disc but of course there isnt.  Im using sonic recordnow also have tried realplayer, windows mediaplayerand using xp with the drag and drop to the drive and then it will say cannot copy file regardless if it is pictures, data, or music.  I uninstalled/reninstalled sonic to no avail.  When I did uninstall sonic, there were two other related programs in the add/remove that I assumed went with sonic so I uninstalled those as well and when I did the reinstall they were not there afterwards.  I have tried almost everything I can think of and have gone through almost a full spindle of cds and am at my wits end.  System restore is not an option as I have tons of data downloaded since the problems first occurred and dont want to lose it (I have no floppy drive either--didnt think I needed it at the time---DUH ERICA!!)  I have not added any software or hardware of any kind.  Device manager says all is ok.  drivers all current.  The drive is HL-DL-ST RW/DVD GCC 4481b, Im running XP, P4-2.66-80g HD-256mem.  SOMEbody help if possible!!! Erica

Hi Erica,I know you stated all drivers are current, however lets go through a couple of steps to check just in case. This will not effect your 'data' so do not worry; click on the CD/RW link in my post and scroll to Section 15, article 1; Section 20, article 3; Section 11, articles 2 & 1. Verify that you have DMA enabled, Section 15, articles 14 & 13.Also if per chance ou have Sonic`s DLA installed, uninstall it for now.Best Regards God, grant me the senility to forget the people I never liked anyway, the good fortune to run into the ones I do and the eyesight to tell thedifference. still having the same problem after all steps were completed....used mediaplayer this time got invalid alignment specified after only one song burned :(

They are sending a local tech a new drive to come out and install.  Maybe they can definitively conclude either software/hardware.  Either way its getting fixed!!

Problem:  Writing to CDs starts to fail and yeilds unpredictable results; CD is 'detected' upon reboot - Uninstall and Reinstall don't fix this, nor do re-seating cables, etc.   There are no driver updates available from DELL or manufacturer.  There is a firmware update for a simliar model drive, BUT NOT THIS ONE.  Also, the drive is not listed as Windows supported hardware on Microsoft.com (although SIMILAR models are, this one ISN'T).   I've experienced this problem as well, which seems to manifest itself after owning the machine for a few months, and gets progresively worse   SOLUTION?  DELL tech support *800.624.9896 escalated support states this is a 'known issue' for the Dimension 2400 (some models, not all) and the only solution was to replace the entire CPU.  Good luck!
