Bougun,

Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.
The following site shows you how to remove and replace the drive.

Dell- I believe the question was more of a question on is there a DVD Burner solution for the I8200 that would allow for removal of the CDRW and replace with a DVDRW?

I have called and spoke with Dell sales directly and they have informed me there is no such device for the 8200.  They also informed me that it is likely not to be a solution in the future either.

My next question is why not?  The system can clearly handle the upgrade.  Please advise ?

Thanks

If you can't supply us with a DVD burner for our laptop, just give us access to all of the available bezels so that we can determine which bezels will fit which drives.  It's no problem getting a drive to install in the laptop, it's just near impossible to get a bezel to match.

It would be nice if we could switch out the internals as you are suggesting.  I might try that just to see what would happen.  I have several old CD rom units that I could remove the bezels from.  I will keep you posted.  If Dell is not going to come up with a solution for obviously one of the most versatile and widely used laptops (I8200) then maybe we take matters into our own hands.

It seems so funny that the Latitude series and now the inspiron series use the same style bays.  One of dells most popular for years and now the 8500 and 8600 are completely different with no new solutions coming out for the most widely used styles.

Dell maybe playing the old IBM game with its our machines and we don't care what the customer wnats were going to do what we want.

Well Dell take notes from IBM the customer will make you fail if you refuse to produce products that are upgradeable and modular in todays market world. Which obviously is not the case with the 8500 and 8600.  They are terribly designed machines.  The 8200 is still one of the most sought after products.  Very versitale and modular.  Why not support it with some upgrades?

Thanks

Hello,
you all are talking about "bezels", can someone explain me what this is, I'm not a native english speaker and I don't find this word in any dictionary.
Why can't I use a DVD burner from another manufacturer, if the connecter is the same??

Bougun, a bezel is the faceplate or the front drive cover.  All mobile optical drives are built the same, but if you put just any old drive in the fixed bay it may not match the color or design of the laptop.  This is especially important if you want to make it a modular drive as the cover is usually rounded and specific to the laptop.  You could make it rounded with sandpaper or a knife but that can get messy and it may not look very good.

The NEC 4x DVD+R/RW fits well into the fixed bay of my I8100.  It's true that the color scheme doesn't match but the drive open and closes correctly and works 100% of the time.

That drive would work in a desktop computer.  Notebook DVD burners are @$100 more expensive than their desktop counterparts since they are smaller.
