Thank you for visiting the Dell Community Forum.

You may want to check the system BIOS setup and see if the hard drive is being identified under Primary Disk 0. If not set this option to Auto. If the drive is not available, with the system unplugged try reseating (unplugging and reconnecting) the hard drive data cable (wide gray ribbon cable) a couple of times to clean the connections off and then clear the NVRAM (see below).

If none of this helps, please reply with further details and someone may be able to offer more technical or trouble-shooting advice.

Thank you Stephen. I did try all the options that you mentioned, but to no avail. Finally a friendly Dell technician diagnosed the inevitable for me -- a hard disk crash. He replaced my hard disk, and I now have a functioning pc. Many thanks again for your support and suggestions,
