XPS 8930, memory upgrade from 16GB to 64GB

Hi - I would like to know what current memory is installed on my XPS 8930, I see its 16GB, but not sure it's in one single slot, (Dell says its max 4 x 16GB) if so what should I buy, there are so many possibilities;
DDR4 PC4-21300 • 16-18-18 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR4-2666 • 1.2V • Ballistix Sport • BLS16G4D26BFSC
DDR4 PC4-21300 • 16-18-18 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR4-2666 • 1.2V • Ballistix Sport • BLS16G4D26BFSB
DDR4 PC4-21300 • 16-18-18 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR4-2666 • 1.2V • Ballistix Sport • BLS16G4D26BFSE
DDR4 PC4-21300 • CL=19 • Single Ranked • x8 based • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR4-2666 • 1.2V • 1024Meg x 64 • Crucial • CT2K8G4DFS8266

(found on http://eu.crucial.com/eur/en/compatible-upgrade-for/Dell/xps-8930)

Would they all be compatible to whatever is on my system? Description says Installed Memory 16.0GB (15.8 GB Usable) but nothing to confirm its already just in one slot or 2 x 8GB (to determine how many new 16 GB sticks need to be purchased). Is there a Dell site which can provide this directly?

Many thanks in advance.

Mark

Chris,

I think there is a problem with what is in the service manual with regards to the Table 2 Memory configuration matrix. In the 8 GB & 16 GB configurations modules are installed in pairs in slots with different colored (white & black) securing tabs whereas in the 24 GB configuration matching modules are installed in slots with similar colored (white/white & black/black) securing tabs. I believe matching pairs should always be installed in slots with similar colored securing tabs. This mistake in the service manuals for the XPS 8910 and XPS 8920 also.

Lets review.

The XPS 8930 has four DIMM slots. Which support 8GB, 16GB, 24GB, 32GB, and 64GB UDIMM DDR4 memory. Up to 2400MHz for i3 CPU and up to 2666MHz for i5/i7/i7k CPU.

Use the white slots DIMM 1 and DIMM 2 if you only have two memory modules.

The XPS 8930 memory slots are pictured below.
27 White DIMM 2
26 Black DIMM 4
25 White DIMM 1
24 Black DIMM 3

The validated configurations are below =
8GB White DIMM 1 4GB, White DIMM 2 4GB
16GB White DIMM 1 8GB, White DIMM 2 8GB
24GB White DIMM 1 4GB, White DIMM 2 4GB, Black DIMM 3 8GB, Black DIMM 4 8GB
32GB White DIMM 1 8GB, White DIMM 2 8GB, Black DIMM 3 8GB, Black DIMM 4 8GB
64GB White DIMM 1 16GB, White DIMM 2 16GB, Black DIMM 3 16GB, Black DIMM 4 16GB

Not validated but works according to a Forum customer =
48GB White DIMM 1 16GB, White DIMM 2 16GB, Black DIMM 3 8GB, Black DIMM 4 8GB

Dell validated OEM memory sticks =

Fortunately, there is little difference in performance in gaming between 2133 MHz and 2666 MHz according this article: https://techbuyersguru.com/gaming-ddr4-memory-2133-vs-26663200mhz-8gb-vs-16gb?page=0

two 16 GB memory modules for a total of 32 GB = both in white slots?

single 16GB shipped in which slot?

Chris, thanks. I know that the memory configurations listed may be the only ones validated by Dell but I know at least two other configurations that work, two 16 GB memory modules for a total of 32 GB. I am currently using that configuration in my XPS 8910. Also my XPS 8910 came with 16 GB in a single memory module.

Two 16 GB memory modules in slots XMM1 (DIMM1) (White) and XMM2 (DIMM) (White).

Single 16 GB memory module in slot labeled XMM1 (DIMM1) (White). The original memory module supplied by Dell was a (SK Hynix) DDR4-2133 HMA82GU6MFR8N-TF and the one I added was a (Crucial) DDR4-2133 CT16G4DFD8213.

I'm thinking of upgrading my XPS 8930 with a similar configuration: 2x16GB. Any information whether this works?

If you already have 2x16GB, then 4x16GB should work. The 4x16GB configuration is one of the configurations listed in the Memory configuration matrix (Table 2) of the XPS 8930 Service Manual.

You never said what you going to end up with. Before you buy any more you need to open it up and see how many sticks are in it. They juggle those sticks depending on what they have at the time sometimes. Also don't buy more than you need, 16gb is a lot.

Computer in question came installed with 2 x 8GB/1333 Mhz cards. Thinking to replace them with 2 x 16 GB/2666 Mhz for total of 32 GB. I could also combine all four for a total of 48 GB. However,  I understand that all DRAM will be limited to the lowest frequency card installed, thus not sure it's worth keeping those slower cards in.

Neither of the above options (2x16GB or 2x16GB + 2x8GB) are listed in Dell's official configurations. New to all of this, so wondering if anyone has had any luck or advice before I blow up the computer.

You need to go with Dells guidelines. If you have sticks left over you can easily sell them online (or send them to me.....lol). You won't hurt the computer by trying different ones.

"Computer in question came installed with 2 x 8GB/1333 Mhz cards."

I think you need to check again but I believe the XPS 8930 comes with 2666 MHz DIMMS. If you are not sure you can download and run CPU-Z.

Also look at this thread: https://www.dell.com/community/XPS-Desktops/XPS-8930-DIMM-slots/td-p/6130986/page/2

Dell's official configurations are not the only working configurations. My XPS came from Dell with a configuration that is not listed the the service manual.

worldhopping, I think you are looking at the DRAM Frequency on the Memory tab in CPU-ID. Instead you should look at the SPD tab and select the memory slot # on the left corresponding the the slots your memory is install in, then look at the Max. Bandwidth. It will probably read DDR4-2666 (1333 MHz) or something like that. Another program you can use is HWiNFO to get the information.

Vic > Thanks for the link. I actually poked around in the forums here and yeah, seems safe to try different configurations. Did run CPU-ID before and found that factory installed memory is only 1333 Mhz. Apparently Costco's versions are a little different, and this was probably one way to cut down on costs. Wish it was more!
