Sounds like it did not boot from the cd . . if you have the cd set as the first boot device in BIOS, when you start you should see a black screen with a prompt to "Strike any key to boot from CD" . . it can go by quickly so have a finger on the keyboard when you turn it on.  After that you should have a screen that gives you the opportunity to delete and then recreate partitions . . delete the C: and recreate it, select the C: partiton and click install Windows on this partition . . it should then format the drive and proceed to the installation.

This is a good guide for a clean install of XP . . you might want to print it out for reference during the installation.

Hope ths helps . . wrs

Thanks for the quick response and instructions.  I went all the way to do the install.

When I press "D" to delete the C: partition, it tells me to make sure I am not deleting the required operating system programs to start up windows.  When I press ENTER to re-install a fresh WinXP into the C: partition, it tells me that this installation over the old software will cause operating system problems.

Should I go ahead and delete the C: partition?  Thanks,

Yes . . then set up a new partition ( or two partitions if you want to separate data from the system) for XP to install to.  XP will format the new ( clean ) partition and proceed to install. . in 30 mins or so you will have a spanking clean installation of XP . . you will need to quickly enable the firewall and download updates.

Now this will erase evrything on that drive . . be sure you have backups or have use the Files and Setting Transfer Wizard
