how can I extend a striped meta given to ESX servers?

Hello,

We need to add space to disks of VMWare machines for application.

Can we extend striped metas given to ESX?

Is this online?

How can we do that?

Do we need to unmask and unmap disks before extension?

And what about SRDF metas?

Thank you.

before we consider your options, how big is the VMware datastore right now, are you licensed for storage vMotion ??

Also, what version of ESX are you running? Historically it hasn't been possible to extend VMFS volumes, even if you extend the LUN. However, I think one of the recent updates added this feature. I'm not a VMWare expert, so check the version.

To add members to a striped meta and preserve the data, you have to have a BCV of equal composition as the meta you're expanding, as well as the devices you want to add to the meta. It's super easy if you use SMC but still pretty easy using CLI.

I've done many expansions on Windows hosts online but I have never done one for ESX. We have standard LUN sizes and if more space is required, we add a new LUN for growth and/or storage vmotion to free up space.
