methods for searching celerra cifs shares

Turning up the option to index the CIFS Shares for easy searching is something that needs to be done on the clients accessing these.  Please note, though, that there have been issues in the past with this.

I have not found a way I can add cifs shares to windows 7 library (a requirement for indexing).  I can't seem to turn on any option for my celerra shares to index cifs shares.

google it for enabling or disabling the index serach, you will find lots of post on them..

You don't want to have your clients indexing network locations - having dozens or hundreds of search indexes will be a problem.  We're looking into alternatives as well as we have begun relying heavily on Windows Search since Server 2008.  We're looking into Windows Search Server 2008 Express, which you can point Windows Search clients to via Group Policy and still only maintain the central index.    

I agree.  I don't want local searches either which is why the 2008 server indexer was so nice.  The Windows 7 machines could read the index without indexing locally.  We have found a suitable solution, I think.  We are testing microsoft search server 2010 express and it works pretty well.  Although I think the indexing agent updates every file as accessed so that deduplication does not run on them.  The search server 2010 express is just a free version of sharepoint.  We are already in the process of possibly moving to sharepoint so that will be a solution for now.  But sharepoint search does not integrate to the file browser of windows 7 and its nice little search box.

I Would like to find out, the list of clients actively accessing the NFS mount points on celerra NFS server.  I tried # showmount -a   But the output gives a pretty long list of clients,  and this is not the list which is currently accessing.....

I need your big help on finding a solution on this.

just be aware that this list might not be 100% accurate either

the list of tcp connections doesn't include clients doing NFS over UDP

also a NFS client or server is free to close the tcp conn while the share is still mounted - when needed it gets transparently re-established (without a mount)

since NFS is stateless there is no better way of telling

showmount does give you an accurate list from the Celerra mountd which clients have mounted shares

that doesn't mean that they are currently doing I/O

also any clients that didn't unmount (like they were just turned off without unmount or removed from the net) will still be on that list
