InsightIQ - How to upgrade without deploying a new ova.

We need to upgrade our InsightIQ vm without deploying a new vm.

I found that OS is exactly the same, so replacing the correct directories should be enough.

Anybody have experience with the same?

Finally EMC listened. InsightIQ 2.5 (released yesterday) rpm based install as option.

Just setup a Redhat or CentOS server and your done.

Secondly they implemented Data Exports, which was also a request from us for a while.

Thumps up for EMC.

what do you mean redeploy ? I had to deploy a brand new VM and then tell it to download data from the store..what a PITA.

You can do it,  but I had to do a few odd things... but really if you are storing most of the data on /ifs on the cluster rather than on the VM,  you can just redeploy.

if i look at it once a month it's a miracle. I can't believe we actually paid for this software, i could have done better with quota/perl and dygraph.

i hope Isilon comes up with an upgrade in place option. I don't manage VM infrastructure, so i had to literally order a VM, migrate data from the old VM and then request to decommission the old one. Then i have to update my internal documentation that tells folks how to get to InsightIQ VM now that it has a new name ..etc. PAIN

That is what I mean by redeploy.

However,  you can root the box and and upgrade it. Not saying i've done that... but I do know it works.. just have to copy some files.. well a lot of files... it wasn't worth the time to do it,  but I was determined.

Exactly the reason why I need a inplace upgrade.

We need to request a new vm, ip, etc.

Get someone to import the ova, get a unix guy to install the tools, ldap, monitoring, etc.

Then I can start moving the clusters to the new vm, and start the whole process in reverse to get rid of the old vm.

And that every time we need to upgrade the software.

in Short, that sucks.

So if someone can tell me which dir's I need, please do.

Sorry all.  Ignore me, this thread is a rant about the current process.

Typically when you are ready to "upgrade" your InsightIQ, it isn't in-place.  The preferred method is to temporarily have the two instances running and when you go to "Add Cluster" in the settings of the new instance, you select "I want to monitor a cluster already being monitored by....".  It then runs an import of the existing data.  As noted:

[...]

Import a cluster to monitor

If you import a monitored cluster from another instance of InsightIQ, InsightIQ

immediately begins monitoring that cluster. In addition, InsightIQ initiates a one-time

process that imports data from the other instance of InsightIQ. Depending on the amount

of data being imported, this import process can take a long time to complete. InsightIQ

merges the imported data with the existing monitored-cluster data and stores it in the

data store associated with the new instance of InsightIQ.

[...]

You can refer to the "Isilon InsightIQ Version #.# Installation Guide".  For instance, the latest guide is available on support.emc.com via the following link:

can you share the quota report script with me? I need to report on quota for all the subfolders, capacity usage.

I found smartquota is pain and hard to read.

    #2) Think before you type.
