Avamar + DataDomain Licensing

Hello,

where can i find a Avamar + DD Licensing Guide?

I am not sure about the replication license in the case of Avamar + Datadomain on the replication site.

I know that in Avamar only solutions the replication licenses are for free. But when I have a Datadomain on both sides, do I have to license the DD on both sides or is it the same as Avamar only systems?

here we go the licensing guide for Networker and Avamar

http://powerlink.emc.com/km/live1/en_US/Sales_Support/Sales_Guide/EMC_SoftwarePriceGuide_BackupRecovery.pdf?mtcs=ZXZlbnRUeXBlPUttQ2xpY2tTZWFyY2hSZXN1bHRzRXZlbnQsZG9jdW1lbnRJZD0wOTAxNDA2NjgwNzZiZDVhLGRhdGFTb3VyY2U9RENUTV9lbl9VU18w

if you have a hybrid AV+DD at primary site and wanted to replicate to DR site, both site must have AV+DD, you cant have single AV at Primary writing to 2 DD on different location, it is not supported.

on Primary site, you need to license the AV capacity + DD license for Avamar (based on the EBSS sizing recommendation)

on DR site you should have the same/similar licensing as well only that you need AV Replication license.

All necessary licenses that related to DD must be purchased (boost & replication - if you are replicating to DR)

even avamar 7.0 can store the backup metadata to DD, when you replicate to DR site, you still require AV node + DD, else you cant recover your backup at DR site.

Dave,

AFAIK there is no avamar and ddr replication guide.

You just need ddboost license on data domain and to add your two DDR on Avamar configuration. There is no need for replication license on data domain.

Your init replication is on Avamar side configured, not on DD side.

I've read that, but it doesn't explain why. The DD itself doesn't actually do any replication and the features gained by the replication license apparently aren't used.

Why do you need the Data Domain Replication License? Doesn't Avamar, through boost, manage the replication?

Per the Avamar DD integ guide Pg 24 - Licensing

The DD Boost license must be installed on the Data Domain system.

For replication from one Data Domain system to another, a replication license

must be installed.

When Avamar is integrated with Data Domain, Avamar stores the backup metadata and Data Domain stores the backup data. During replication, the source Avamar replicates the metadata to the target Avamar and asks the source Data Domain (through the Boost API) to replicate the backup data to the target Data Domain.

While the Avamar is in control of the replication, it is the Data Domain doing most of the heavy lifting for replication of integrated backups and this is why the Data Domain must be licensed for replication as well.

If you are having issues with licensing cost or complexity, it may be worthwhile to look into Data Protection Suite which licenses the BRS products strictly on a capacity basis. It is much simpler and often cheaper as well.

For replication, do you need DD Replicator license for both DDs, even though replication is unidirectional?

Also, for Avamar licesning for DR, does the Primary Capacity and Replicated Capacity License cover both PROD and DR sites?   How about for the Backups to DD primary capacity license too?

Hi there,

I have done a linked Avamar / DD configuration in EBSS but can't see the licence requirements for Data Domain backup anywhere. Can you point me in the right direction? I'm using EBSS v5.14.2 which I think is the most up-to-date.

Thanks,

Ed

Hi Ed,

the sizing does not provide the software licensing, but it gives a very clear guidelines of the licenses required.

There are 2 type:

- if the license is using DPS-Backup you just need to count the total backup environment + the growth rate (e.g. 3 years) below, so DPS-Backup required around 10 TB license (highlighted in yellow)

- if the license is using traditional avamar, you need to count:

1. Avamar license, i guess if using M1200 it has to be 3 TB Avamar license and 16 TB of Data Domain license ( based on the Physical capacity required- highlighted in Red Box). These must be done in the CxP/DxP at Avamar configuration.

for both option above, do not forget to add DDBoost license in the Data Domain configuration

DR site do not need any licenses, only need to add Avamar replication license for DR if using traditional license.

while for DD Appliance, please include the DD Replication license on both DD Appliance at PROD & DR. You can refer to the EMC Backup Software licensing Guide

Great that helps a lot, what about data being replicated in from another Data Domain?
