NFS export with subfolder mount enabled

is there a difference (performance, others) in having many nfs exports or one with subfolder mount enabled?

we have something like this

/ifs/shares/shareA

               /shareB

               /shareC

does it make any difference if i export just /ifs/shares or if i create many exports for shareX

permission will be all the same, nobody will mount /ifs/shares but it's not a big problem if somebody does by mistake

At a certain point, 750 exports for example, it will become problematic to manage the exports in the GUI.

Matt:

what do you do or discuss if your boss or client unexpectedly is requesting to have some

exceptional permissions/restrictions set for export 699 immediately?

Hi Peter,

I would counter with the ability to maintain 699 exports should changes be required could be problematic.  Having to modify that many exports (even with RAN) would be painful.

I am curious what the reasoning behind this request is; typically it is for security but please, do share.

Cheers,
Matt

Matt,

my thought is that while the "one-size-fits-all approach" (size = export settings here)

is super convenient, it is inflexible in case of upcoming requests for "exceptions".

In particular if these appear "urgently".

If you need to implement, some special restrictions to the single

mount point no 699 out of 750 (which are all covered by the same

subfolder-enable export), you'd either need to move the dir for 699 to

somewhere else in the /ifs tree and export it from there (which would

interrupt clients), or need to split things into 749+1=750 individual

exports all at once.

Maybe I'm overly cautious, but haven't we seen strange things (requests)

coming out of the clear blue sky? Perhaps managing a few dozen

subfolder-enabled exports with a few dozen actual mount points each

could be good balance. YMMV

Cheers
