Backup files stored on EMC VNXe 3150 using Backup Exec 15

Hello all, beforehand if this is the incorrect place to ask please move this to the correct place.

He have here a VNXe3150 where we have a some shared folder (as \\server\shared1\; \\server\shared2\, etc.) and we use Backup Exec 15 in order to do our daily backups (first to our storage and then duplicate to tape).

We would like to backup the files that are under the server which is shared via the VNXe, however we have not been able to do it yet. I've tried the symbolic link option, which on Backup Exec was able to see the folders and its contents but no file was backup after the job was done, and also attempted to enable the NDMP server option on VNXe and though was able to see the server, I was unable to see what were inside the folders and when job ran it failed providing the following information:

UMI: V-79-57344-4875
Final error: 0xe000130b - The operation was terminated on the NDMP server.

Maybe I have missed a configuration on VNXe side and unfortunately I was unable to find proper information on how to do the backup. So I was hoping a little help on this one.

Thanks in advance and best regards!

NDMP configuration on the VNXe is pretty simple and explained in the Unisphere Online help

Using Backup Exec with CIFS shared folder storage

To back up shared folders with Backup Exec, perform the following tasks:

arrowright.gif  Create a Backup Exec NDMP server to associate with an Shared Folder Server

              1. From the Unisphere dashboard, create a Shared Folder Server with Windows Shares (CIFS) enabled.

              2. Select Settings > Shared Folder Server Settings, and specify the following settings:

                    • Select NDMP to enable NDMP on the CIFS Shared Folder Server.
The Shared Folder Server account name is ndmp (this is not editable).

                    • Enter an NDMP account Password for the CIFS Shared Folder Server and click Apply Changes.

              1. Launch Backup Exec console.

              2. From the Backup Exec console, add an NDMP server object for the CIFS Shared Folder Server. Specify the following:

                    • IP address of the Shared Folder Server.

                    • NDMP port (the default is port 1000).

              3. From the Backup Exec console, create an NDMP user account. Specify the following information for the account settings:

                  • User name: ndmp (the CIFS Shared Folder Server NDMP user name).

                  • Password: NDMP server password specified in Step 2.

              1. Save the Backup Exec NDMP server settings.

arrowright.gif  Create a Backup Exec Device

    1. From the Backup Exec console, create a backup Device (for example, by using the Configure Devices Assistant).

    2. Within the device settings, associate the Backup Exec device with the NDMP server you created for the NDMP server.

    3. Specify appropriate settings for the Backup Exec Device, such as:

        • Alias name for the device

        • Path to the location where backup data will reside.

        • Maximum size of backup-to-disk files.

        • Any other applicable settings.

    1. Save the device settings

    2. From the Backup Exec console Device panel, view the device Backup to Disk location, and verify that the device is enabled and online.

Hello @Rainer_EMC , here would be my problem:

I've already done the steps which I found here

(Most likely the one you attempted to put the step through but I'm unsure why it keeps redirecting me towards here again) And that is why I asked again, because it keeps doing the same error.

I will give another try though just in case...

I would look at the BE config and logs

On the VNXe there isnt much you can get wrong - only the NDMP password.

Or for some reason it fails to create a snapshot

If you cannot figure it out from the BE logs I suggest to open an SR and have support look at the VNXe logs

Hello, now it appears to have worked, but it seems to me that for some reason the backup takes forever and though when I enter the server it has around 400gb of files, when the backup goes it seems to go waay longer than it and some cases to have 500+gb which confuses me :/

I usually don't like double posting, but I do need to ask which are those: bkp.png

The ones that have the black line over it are the actual shared folders, but when we pull the server up on Backup Exec those group.app and vol_ appears and both of us here don't know what are they. Also when we tried the backup for some reason the total files when checking on propertiers are 400GB and when the backup ran it took over 2TB.
