You should set both CD drives as Cable Select, not master/slave. Cable select is what systems are strapped as when they leave the factory. Not many systems use the old master/slave stapping.
Hey now Jack .. are you saying I`m an "old system"? ...lol
Scott, (if needed) Click on the CD/RW gif in my post and scroll to Section 15, articles 13 & 14, may help.

Thanks again Predator...the tool in section 15 article 13 works great, but for some reason whenever I restart the computer windows switches the cdrw drive back to PIO. So I tried article 14's tip for deleting the registry value, but that didnt seem to have any effect. I suppose the worst case senario is that I just have to run that program before I burn anything.
edit/
After attempting a test burn I discovered that even though the device manager is reporting my CDRW is in UDMA mode, it is actually running in PIO. I tried burning at 24x and it took 11 minutes, so I guess I'm back to square one! BTW, I set both drives as CS and that hasnt helped. I am going to put my old burner in the 4600 and see if its DMA is recognized.
Well my old CDRW (which is recognized fine as UDMA in my other comp) would only work in PIO mode on the 4600. I hope there isnt something wrong with the dell motherboard. maybe reinstalling windows will help...Im at a loss as to what to do now!
I'm having the exact same problem with my 8300. I added a DVD burner while keeping my DVD-ROM. Whatever device is in the "slave position" (I've used both CSEL and MAS/SLAV) ends up being stuck in PIO mode. I also tried using the tool above and even though the device manager is reporting the device is in DMA mode, it is actually still in PIO mode. Is it possible to have both devices in DMA mode? I've tried EVERYTHING I've read about over the past couple weeks. Can anybody help me out? Thank you.
Reset the BIOS to default configuration. Save and exit. Boot back to BIOS and verify that the secondary IDE channel is set to use DMA mode (AUTO) if available. Do you see both optical drives? Boot back to Windows. Go to Device Manager and remove the SECONDARY IDE CHANNEL under IDE ATA controllers. Reboot PC and Windows will reload the driver. Check to see if both devices are running in DMA mode.
Wow, I missed it in the BIOS. I was poking around in there earlier just to make sure the UDMA was on, but I never noticed the area where you can select what your Slave Secondary IDE device was. I wasn't able to reset the BIOS to default, but I changed the slave device to Auto instead of OFF. UDMA was always "on". When I restarted the BIOS both Secondary devices said CD-ROM device. I went to XP, and without reloading the IDE Channel driver, it was working. Thank you so much!! Finally both devices are working properly.
