sparticus1262,

Thank you for using Dell's Community Forum.

The HDDs on portables do make a little more noise than desktops; I would not be concerned with that noise.

I've been using laptops since '96 and I had not witnessed this behaviour until my new D600 arrived (the ticking noises occur since the day I first got the machine from Dell).

I'm not concerned with ticking noises when there is disk activity (although even then it's generally softer than what I'm experiencing), but in this case the ticking occurs while the harddrive is idle (the hdd led does not show any activity), and stops when there is hdd activity.

I ran the system's harddrive diagnostics tests and they showed no problems so I ignored it for a while, but recently it also intermittently makes a loud (single) click noise, which is similar to what I experienced on my old cpi 300 which eventually ended in hard drive failure (out of warranty so I bought a new generic laptop drive for it).

Now this loud tick is worrying me. Any suggested course of action? (preferably before I suffer dataloss)

cheers

Correction.  I should have said D600, not C600, notebook.  Any help on this would be greatly appriciated.

Thanks!!

I am having this problem too.  I do not get any loud clicks though.   Just a faint, VERY iritating, fast ticking sound.  There is no hard drive access.  It goes away as soon as I do anything then come back later.

This is the second harddrive I have had from Dell for this C600 notebook and the first one did not do this at all.  This one has been doing it since day one.  It just started doing it again.

Please give us an answer on this.  "You should not be concerned" is not good enough.  I'ma computer professional as well and I know this should not be happening.

I'm going to give this a try as well (as soon as I figure out how to make a bootable usb or cdrom) :p

tnx.

-- update: downloaded the patch, made a bootable cdrom with the files on it and ran the tool (dft), which says that my firmware doesn't need updating.....

So I guess it appears I'm stuck with this ticking noise until at some point it dies

-- update: borrowed a usb floppy drive and used the floppy image instead, ran the update and sofar so good, it appears to have worked.
