Inspiron G7 17-7790, use two SSD?

I've just ordered a New Inspiron G7 17-7790 laptop. In the Setup and Specs PDF, it says (regarding storage):

Storage
Your computer supports one of the following configurations:
• One 2.5-inch hard-disk drive
• One M.2 2280 solid-state drive
• One 2.5-inch hard-disk drive and one M.2 2280 solid-state drive
• One 2.5-inch hard-disk drive and one M.2 Intel Optane memory

The laptop configuration has an M.2 SSD drive and a 2.5 SATA 5400 HD.  Can the SATA drive be replaced by a 2.5 SSD (i.e., will there be a problem running two SSD rather than one of each)?

Not sure what Chris was talking about, sounds like he didn't read your question right.  Yes I just did this today, I took out the 1TB 5400RPM HDD and put in a 2TB Crucial MX500 SSD so now I have that plus the 256GB NVME SSD for OS, works great and took all of 10 minutes.

Just like the PDF, the Dell USA sales site only list one SSD and one HDD.

128GB M.2 PCIe NVMe Solid State Drive (Boot) + 1TB 5400 rpm 2.5" SATA Hard Drive (Storage)

-or-

256GB M.2 PCIe NVMe Solid State Drive (Boot) + 1TB 5400 rpm 2.5" SATA Hard Drive (Storage)

So what you are asking was never tested/validated by Dell. In theory only, you would remove the HDD (page 31), install a 2.5" SSD in its place using same hard drive assembly, then get a 3rd party SATA to SSD converter to attach to the SATA interposer.

Hi,

Thank you for sharing your experience with this, I have a G7 7790 17 inch with a single NVMe TOSHIBA 512GB, I have wanted to add an additional drive for ages but gave up after opening the machine up and finding that although there looked liked room (im no expert), there was no cable and I couldn't find anywhere to purchase an interposer cable, I emailed dell for help but didnt get a response.

Anyway after reading your post I'm now thinking of getting a Crucial MX500 as the second drive, do you think it would work and if so what cables might I need?

Any info, better alternatives or thoughts would be much appreciated.
