PowerEdge R640 pxe boot re-installation

Hello guys,

Few weeks ago I have installed R640 server with ESXi 6.0.0 through pxe. It was installed successfully.

I would like to reinstall the same server but somehow pxe boot doesn't work. It is looking for mac address but it didn't receive anything from dhcp. The strange thing is that I am able to install new host with the same way with the same dhcp, with the same image in the same network...But if I am trying to reinstall already installed host it doesn't work.

If I will block C drive where ESXi 6.0.0 is installed in BIOS and I will keep just network card there it will work. But it can't install OS because C drive is disabled from Bios.

Is there anything in the BIOS which is blocking it?

Thank you.

I have the newest versions of idrac and bios installed.

Maybe it will help to somebody. The steps I made to fix it:

1. Delete virtual disk

2. Delete RAID

3. Create RAID again

4. Slow inicialization

5. OS installation

Hello,

I just went through the BIOS, but I didn't see anything that would lock storage. I would have expected it to be in Device Settings > PERC , if it was going to be anywhere.

This may be a silly question, but are you calling the drive the C drive, because it is where the OS is installed? I want to make sure that there isn't anything Windows part of the environment and the C partition would be Windows, compared to sda, sdb, etc, or device IDs.

You might review this article. I know that your other hosts are working, but this might help confirm your process: https://www.vmware.com/content/dam/digitalmarketing/vmware/en/pdf/techpaper/vsphere-esxi-vcenter-server-60-pxe-boot-esxi.pdf

All I would expect the controller to do is present a virtual disk. I don't think it would be able to interfere with a PXE installation.

Hello,

Thank you for your reply.

Yes I am calling it C drive because there is OS installed. I have created raid controller 1 with 2 physical disks - one virtual disk.
